Heh! I think she had fun with this one, even if it does seem to let her expound upon a personal pet peeve. (She had me cracking up out loud by the time she brought up Carlyle and his - loosely quoted here - delight in spiking pages with such abuses as "mammonism.") I do share her love of artfully chosen words, though I am no master at doing so.

"How tame and gray is the idiom which conveys a fact, which defines a season, but suggests nothing to our imaginations, by the side of the idiom which brings swiftly before our eyes the brilliant desolation of autumn!" Indeed. :)

Section 5 is PL OK

Section 6 is now in the MW. Three observations :
1. I think socialism meant something different to her, like "sociability"
2. The fact that I don't get bored very easily (I am easily diverted) made me feel a little dumb
and
3. Seriously, are there REALLY people who envy shellfish? That is honestly just pitiful.

Well, Section 6 is PL OK

Envious of a shellfish . . . something I would never be found to feel!  8-)

I couldn't relate to this essay, as I am rarely, rarely bored, and probably have only felt ennui long ago, when trapped in very long religious services where I felt less than my whole, and completely unable to occupy myself with anything. But "freedom from care" to me does not mean boredom and discontent - it means I can work on an audiobook or a quilt in peace and at length! 8-)

I don't have much patience with people who need constant affirmation and entertainment, and who haven't the slightest idea how to do something of value instead of moaning for diversion. I would not have thrived in High Society. Or in France, apparently, where they were more tolerable of stupid people.

I do think Repplier often conflates the concepts of ennui and discontent in this essay, which to me are quite different things. Also, I hardly doubt ennui did not exist among Medieval high society just as much as it did in Repplier's time. . . and does today.

Section seven is up!

So, as is clear by now, I have completely abandoned my plan to divide each essay into two sections based on number of pages, which means the next essay will complete the project. I apologize for any extra work this causes! I guess before setting up my next project I will need to time how long it takes to read a page before deciding how to divide it, and not go by past experience alone. By the way, I am seriously considering a biography of John Brown by W.E.B. DuBois as my next project, if anybody is interested. Unless something irresistible pops up on Gutenberg before then.

No worries, Ciufi. Adjusting the number of rows in the MW is easy. :)

As for your next project, I'll be happy to MC for you again.

And Essay 8 is PL OK

Which is a wrap for you on this audiobook!

This essay is definitely one of those selections that drives home the certainty that there is not one single modern complaint - political, social, personal - that hasn't been voiced long ago. . . and folks think we're so original and fresh with our various issues.

Very true.

Well, that was a quick one! Thank you both so much !   Excited for us to hop in to the bio of John Brown - always an ambiguous historical figure to me, so I am very interested in DuBois's perspective. I am thinking I will put the page for that together this weekend, but, knowing me, it may very well be tomorrow.
