Those Barren Leaves, by Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963)

Volunteers outside the USA: Aldous Huxley died in 1963. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
Those Barren Leaves is a satirical novel by Aldous Huxley published in 1925. It is the story of Mrs. Aldwinkle and her entourage, who are gathered in an Italian palace to relive the glories of the Renaissance. For all their supposed sophistication, they are nothing but sad and superficial individuals in the final analysis. (Summary by Krysti Paul, with the help of Wikipedia)

Target completion date: 2021-12-31

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi.  Welcome to LibriVox.

Before starting this solo project, please see the following recommendations for new readers.

Even if you are experienced with recording elsewhere, please send in a short test recording to check that all the technical settings meet LibriVox requirements before recording a full chapter. See -

1-Minute Test

Also as a new reader here, we strongly recommend that you record a section or two in group projects before embarking on a solo, so that you can get a sense of the amount of time and effort a commitment to a solo recording would entail, as well as become a little familiar with the community here and our process for submitting files, prooflistening, etc. As a soloist, you will be responsible not only for recording and editing all the sections, but you will also be your own book coordinator (BC) which means you will be responsible for entering all the information (titles, time, links) into the workflow system.

Meanwhile, this thread will be moved to Book Suggestions once you have seen and acknowledged this post. Any admin can move it back here for you.

Also when you are ready to come back to this project, please use either the HathiTrust or Google books version which clearly show the 1925 publication date. The text you have linked does not.

Hi Jo!
I have my test recording uploaded - would you prefer for me to add it here as well as in the Listeners & Editors Wanted thread?

I can definitely use one of those two versions - I linked the one from Archive.org to ensure it was visible as public domain. :) Do you want me to update the link in the posting?

Thanks a bunch for your help and guidance!

Link updated! I'm ready to start recording (and I'll be sure to reach out if I get overwhelmed, looking for help). Anything I need to do before I start recording? I've reviewed the forum on how to upload, etc. Sounds like I'm just missing a magic window?

What you are missing is an MC - not me - it isn't PD for me.

I didn't pick this up before since I was kind of at my limit of projects, but I've just gotten a couple cataloged, so I will MC for you krystidee. Your MW will be available shortly.

Meanwhile, since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator(BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the  "Magic Window" in the top post.  Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.

First Time Logging in to the Workflow

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

Please note I have changed the text link in the top post to the 1925 edition on google books.

If you have any questions, let me know.  I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Prooflistener) volunteers.  Looking forward to working with you.

Since you have not read a section in a collaborative project as suggested, I will need to add you as a new reader. Please let me know by what name you would like to be credited in the catalog. This can be real name, your forum name or another pseudonym of your choice. We can also add a link to a personal webpage if you have one.

I've added your catalog name. You can see this on your catalog page at https://librivox.org/reader/16599

If you click on the link for Reader Section Details below your username you will find a summary table showing the status of all the sections that you have signed up to read in uncataloged projects.  Click on any of the thread titles in this list to navigate to the thread on the forum.

Thanks Jo! I just noticed one thing though - my first name is spelled Krysti (not Kristi). Am I able to update that or is that something you'll need to help me with?

Sorry to be such a pain - I'll go back to recording chapter 1 now ;)
