PL OK! And, yes, amazing. He was long-lived for his time too, when old age was even less fun than now.

Best,

Barbara

The mention of the merino ram is significant for somebody who had my primary school education. There are online records (I discovered) of Arthur Young's correspondence with Sir Joseph Banks (in the latter's capacity of merino-sheep-smuggler). Banks was a great promoter of New South Wales as well as of merinos and thus it came to pass that the European settlement of Australia began and continued to prosper 'riding on the sheep's back'.

Best,

Barbara

My cousin Dan raises merinos and llamas. We are astounded - he used to be in Public Relations.

PL Notes - 2 phrases are missing:

At 2:52 "with some modern ones"
At 20:17 "where I had the pleasure of meeting"

I am amazed that you are able to read this badly scanned text!

Interesting to see France on the eve of the Revolution.

Our editor disagrees with Arthur Young about the role of metayage in French agriculture!

PL OK. Wikipedia says that John Stuart Mill disagreed with the unanimous English disaproval of Metayage (as does Wikipedia, I gather). I have no opinion at all :D

And just now, checking against the French text (which I often have to do!) Mme de S writes "Je trouve des métayers et des meuniers qui me doivent toutes ces sommes, et qui n’ont pas un unique sou pour les payer : que fait-on ? il faut bien leur donner."
