In the Heart of Africa, by Samuel White Baker (1821 - 1893)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/in-the-heart-of-africa-by-samuel-white-baker/

A wonderfully readable condensation of two of Baker's earlier, longer works recounting his self-sponsored expeditions into the Dark Continent to discover the sources of the Nile: The Albert N'Yanza, Great Basin Of The Nile (1866) and The Nile Tributaries Of Abyssinia (1867). And, of course, to bag a few elephants along the way. (Summary by Steven Seitel)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3233

Target completion date: 2021-12-31

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Pack your kit, hire a dragoman, a cook, and some camels! Let's go exploring In the Heart of Africa.

This seems an eminently readable (and, I hope, listenable) story of Sir Samuel's self-funded expedition to answer the question of where the Nile River really begins and bring the glory of its discovery home to Great Britain...or "die trying in the attempt."

How well did he succeed in his quest? Or did he? Come along, and let's find out.

Thanks, Ann. I'll populate the MW shortly.

Sunrise 2020 had asked to be DPL again. I've sent her a note. We'll see if she picks up this one.

Should be a fun expedition. :D

Okay, we're underway...you can almost feel the heat!

Chapter 01, The Nubian Desert...

Baker writes in a surprisingly modern style, so it's an easy read. And he dives right in, without overlong preamble. It's already an exciting story. Good fun.

Chapter 03, The Arabs' Exodus...
https://librivox.org/uploads/icequeen/heartofafrica_03_baker_128kb.mp3 (27:48)

Baker asserts that the temperature inside his tent was 95°C, clearly a physical impossibility (even if the tent was full of heavily perfumed visiting Arab women  ). So I omitted the word "Centigrade" and left the temperature scale ambiguous. A harmless Bowdlerization, I hope.

I was a bit slow to catch the steamer and then the camel but now I've caught up. What a terrific story and I'm looking forward to hearing more about his wife as a travel companion!

Glad to have you aboard! :D So far, mostly, the loyal wife just gets sick. :(

Chapter 04, On the Abyssinian Border

Oh, goody. What would a Victorian-era travel memoir be without a good healthy dose of western prejudice? I was beginning to wonder... 8-)

PL of Chapter 5 is ok.

Being socialized in a different era, I wondered if he had what camera he had brought for "a clear shot". 8-)
