X2 that. Baker, in keeping with the standards of his age, is blissfully unaware of the hypocrisy in his statement:

“I admired them as they lay before me with a hunter's pride and satisfaction, but mingled with a feeling of pity for such beautiful and utterly helpless creatures.” (Chapter 05)

But enough of that.

Here's Chapter 07, The Start from Geera

Chapter 8 is ok.

Having seen these wonderful animals in the wild, I definitely prefer them alive! Hopefully we've reached the end of the safaris.

Not yet. No satisfactory African safari can be complete until a few big cats have been slaughtered... :(

Chapter 11, The Bull Elephant...
https://librivox.org/uploads/icequeen/heartofafrica_11_baker_128kb.mp3 (26:11)

Now that all of the "big five" dangerous African mammals have been "bagged," we can begin to move on to the real work of the expedition: discovering the sources of the Nile. I hope.

Chapter 12, The Abyssinian Slave-Girls
https://librivox.org/uploads/icequeen/heartofafrica_12_baker_128kb.mp3 (22:37)

To his eternal credit, Baker led the successful 1869 expedition (authorized by the Kedive of Egypt) to suppress slavery in the Soudan and Central Africa.

I hear you, Susanne. I'm not especially fond of "sport" hunting either. Standards were different in Baker's day...

Chapter 13, Gondokoro

Chapter 14, Startling Disclosures

Baker seems determined to proceed no matter how suicidal the venture....

From the Last Secrets to the Heart of Africa, the determination of these explorers is just amazing! And some good old-fashioned courtesy saved the day. Mrs. Baker proved a most useful travel companion in these last chapters.

Chapter 16, The Greeting of the Slave Traders
https://librivox.org/uploads/icequeen/heartofafrica_16_baker_128kb.mp3 (33:26)

Baker engages in a theological argument with a simple "Godless savage"...and loses!
