Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women , by Elizabeth Blackwell (1821 - 1910)

This project is now complete.  All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/pioneer-work-opening-medical-profession-to-women-by-elizabeth-blackwell/

A fascinating account of the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. She writes of her struggles in being accepted to a medical school (at one point she is advised to disguise herself as a male). She details her experiences while in the process of obtaining her degree, and her work both with patients and administratively, helping to found medical schools and hospitals for women.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Well, my schedule on our trip didn't allow me as much time for LV as I had anticipated, but I'll try to get caught up now.

So good to hear your voice again. :D

Chapter 3 (sections 8 - 11) now ready. You are right, they are loooong chapters, but so fascinating.
The college Elizabeth went to is now Hobart and William Smith college in Geneva, about a 45 minute drive away. I must drive by it once a month during the summer months as we love that area; next time we go by it, I'll need to envision Elizabeth working away at her studies inside those windows, ignoring the peepers looking in to catch a glimpse of her.

Oh - what I meant by "I must drive by it once a month" was "I bet I drive by it once a month". I see it often. It's close to Seneca Lake, a beautiful Finger Lake with lots of great wineries and restaurants along it.

Sections 12-16 are now ready. This is a loooong chapter and my intention was to complete it before uploading the sections. However, I've developed a head cold which is holding up my recording. You probably will notice it in section 16, but I now sound much worse! So I will hold off for a bit until this has cleared out.

Oh, the dreaded head cold! Please take care.

Visiting my brother in Oregon, but I do have some spaces here and there, and I found out PL is a great way to make the flight more bearable. I will get to these in due course.

All PL OK except for a couple of things in Section 13
At about 2:57 "Cowper's mother" I'm sure must refer to the English poet William Cowper. His last name is pronounced "cooper." Don't ask me why, but I mispronounced this for a long time until someone corrected me. Just a little after that is "papier-mâché"
which I would give more of the French pronunciation to, as here: https://www.howtopronounce.com/papier-m%C3%A2ch%C3%A9
but that is probably optional. ( I think these are about p 106) Won't comment on any of the other French because I can't do any better.

Listened to most of this at 37,000 feet. 8-)

Welcome back from your travels!
Thank you for the corrections - for the French phrases, I have been using forvo.com and trying to write everything out phonetically, but I'm sure I'm still butchering it to a degree. When I saw papier-mache, I took the lazy way out - but glad you called me on it.
The worst of my cold is over, still a little nasally, but working on finishing chapter 4.

13 is ready for PL spot check.
