I'm glad you think so, Susanne — and I agree. Truth is, I live with a secret dread you may be finding all this a bit on the dull or difficult side, given your own taste in Librivox listening (like my own, in fact) is mostly for works of fiction. I do think, though, there's a lot of energy and life in Carlyle's literary voice, and for my money there's some pretty strong inherent interest in much of his material, too. Even after the fall of the Bastille there's still some very exciting, and indeed momentous, action to come in Volume 1. It must have been an amazing and, for many, distressing, time to live through.

Hello Peter,
You’re right, my preference is still fiction but this book comes pretty close. And I really enjoy your enthusiastic presentation

I think after the three volumes, I’ll return to fiction. How about you?

Well thank you! That's encouraging indeed!

My own preferences still lie strongly in fiction, certainly for solo readings anyway. I rather surprised myself with this one, to tell you the truth. I've sent you a PM on this.

In the meanwhile, I have uploaded:

I have uploaded:
Section 48: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol1_48_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (9:20)
Section 49: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol1_49_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (12:08)
Section 50: https://librivox.org/uploads/craigdav1/frenchrevolutionvol1_50_carlyle_128kb.mp3 (15:46)

So, have now read aloud the whole section of this large work whose only manuscript Carlyle sent to his friend Mill - only to learn subsequently that Mill had misplaced the manuscript, and that Mill's maid had used it to light fires. Cannot begin to imagine how Carlyle felt when he got that news. Anyway, there was no alternative: he had to rewrite the whole of Volume 1.

PL of sections 49 and 50 are ok.

What a disaster  I hope Carlyle had copious notes to reproduce the draft!
