Boy oh boy, there are some long sentences in this novel! One almost has to insert breathing marks in the text as a wind instrument player does in a music score. Not a criticism of Conrad at all — some of these sentences are just magnificent to my ear — but what a contrast to, say, Heminway.

PL of sections 7-9 are okay (and very easy to follow).
Maybe because we could finish the trilogy of No More Parades, I've been reading a very different kind of trilogy by the Norwegian writer Roy Jacobsen. Very enjoyable about life on a tiny island.

I'm hoping I may be able to read the third of the Tietjens novels ("A Man Could Stand Up") next year. I'd not heard to the Jacobsen trilogy, but on reading a bit about it just now, I can see it looks interesting. I have an Australian-born friend whose Norwegian parents were very caught up in the political upheavals of those times, and I understand the tensions arising from allegiances declared then still linger on today in some ways.

The latter part of Section 14 provides an excellent example of the kind of complexity Conrad is handling, I think, where inside, and just outside the landau occupied by Mrs Gould, Don Jose Avellanos, Antonia Avellanos and Martin Decoud we have a whole spectrum of different viewpoints on what's happening in the country at that moment in time - and yet the scene doesn't feel in the least like a dry debate, but on the contrary, seems to arise quite naturally from the established situation. I think it's quite brilliant how Conrad draws all these threads together in one scene — though having said that, I must admit it's taken me several readings of this novel to begin to understand that. And some of it is certainly damned funny — even if in a very bleak way.

Thanks for the heads-up on section 14. I'll listen carefully. We're having a small heatwave and I lie under a tree in my favorite park after school and listen to your recordings.

Sad to say, I have nothing for 'under the tree' today. I read a 5000 word or so section and began editing it, but unaccountably (aghhh!) forgot to save any of my work, and my computer froze, so I lost it all. Serves me right, really! Should have it ready for tomorrow, though.

can you please listen to section 14 at about 3:37 where your recording fades/hesitates and then starts up again: "as the saying goes...". The rest of the section is fine.
Section 15 is okay.

In section 15 I lingered over the scene of Antonia and Martin leaning on the window sill, dusk slowly falling, and the passers-by who are scandalized by those two unchaperoned young people. Of course, I couldn't keep my eyes glued to the page but I keep thinking about the scene...
