5 SF stories by Mack Reynolds, (1917 - 1983)

This project is in our catalog at https://librivox.org/5-sf-stories-by-mack-reynolds-by-mack-reynolds/

Volunteers outside the USA: Mack Reynolds died in 1983. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
Five Science Fiction stories from the strange mind of Mack Reynolds. Always innovative and interesting, these were published in the early science fiction and fantasy magazines of the 1950's and 60's. (Summary by phil chenevert)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Phil,

Very interesting stories well read.

Mercy Flight

The only thing 'wrong' was that at the beginning of the recording, there is only about a quarter of a second of silence. So if you could 'up' that a little.

The Galactic Ghost (I can't really figure out how he came up with that name)

At the very beginning there is quite a bit of noise for the first quarter of a second, and then you don't quite have the full half second before you start speaking.

3:31 our means for transporting you to your new world are limited You said something like tranportating

Also, in this one there is quite a bit of background noise. It sounded a lot, from time to time, of voices in the background during the 'quiet' parts of the recording. I did a little playing around and first took the 'quiet' section at about 2:11 and ran it through Noise Reduction, and then again did it with the section at about 1:37. Each had a different kind of noise, and this seemed to help a lot. I ran both your original recording and also my 'tweeked' recording through Checker, and both of them showed about 24.3 as the background noise level. So that shows to me that noises can slip through and still show a low number.

So, these are what I found.

The Galactic Ghost sounds like something one might have seen on Star Trek.

I am looking forward to the rest.

Wayne

P.S. I would have had these done sooner, but your post didn't show up in my "Notifications". I often go ahead and check manually all of my projects I am involved with and that is how I found them. But I just checked and they were in my "PL view", so maybe I could check that too.

OK Wayne, stories 1 and 5 have been repaired as best I can. Silences and Word fixed and noise reduced. About the noise, yes my environment is noisy and I will tolerate probably more of that pesky stuff than most recorders because of my wife and her physical and mental challenges. Also, I know that the beginning silences of our current template was changed and now says one thing but 'my' first post says that 'less than 1 second' of silence is OK. The original intent was to just have the recording start promptly and not have a long dead silence before the voices began. This makes sense so that the listener hears something and does not wonder if the tape is blank.
Anyway, my projects will usually have the instructions as shown on the first post of this project: less than 1 second. I like to keep it simple. Other BCs will of course do it their way and that is great but i see no reason to be fiddling with adding or trimming off quarters and eighths of seconds. Hope this does not cause you any undue problems :D Image

Phil,

I understand what you are saying. I have to admit that I don't usually read everything in the first post, and did miss the "one second' comment rather then the .5-1 second comment.

As to the fixes, it seems that the link in the MW is the same one as before. I downloaded it twice and the word 'error' is still there.

It may possibly be Tuesday of next week before I can get back on line and do more. A bunch of volunteer and family stuff Friday through Monday. Sorry.

Hey, you are a busy volunteer. Take care of that stuff and come back to pl when you can. I am in no hurry at all.

Whoops. Story 5 has been fixed and uploaded :D correctly this time. Transporting should be OK. at least I hope so.
And about the opening silence being less than a second, I am the only werido that does this so you should not run into this from any other BC. Ha. :?

Well, I am back sooner than I expected. I had a little time before a big family birthday party this afternoon. Sections 1 and 5 are PLOK

I also listened to the two shorter ones, 2 and 4. The Summit was quite the story. What is shows is that the same situation that existed in the '50s was still going on much later. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Summit is PLOK

Halftripper was very interesting until the end, and then it got even better. Boy, that was NOT expected. That guy (Reynolds) sure had an imagination and stories that are so very different.

There was one thing in Halftripper:

3:41.5 For one thing, the shipping lines would soon declare him out of bounds for their crews. You said lanes.

Now it will be Tuesday before I can do the last one.

Phil,

Again, quite a story with a surprising plot twist at the end.

I found only one thing:

18:25 Then I woulda took the plane back to Chi." This is an interesting one. You pronounced it 'Chee”. Actually, “Chi”, pronounced more like “Cheye” with the 'Ch' hard like in 'choice', is a nickname for Chicago, is in the slang “Chi-town. Here is reference I found: https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/chi-town/ Of course it is your call on this one.

Other than that one small thing, it was great and well read.

Thank you Wayne. I knew it was a nickname but (obviously) my stab at saying it was not how the natives pronounced it. Good research and I will fix it; can't have Chicago natives snickering at us can we?
EDIT: DONE. Now chapter 3 has Chi pronounced correctly. :D And thank you for saying it was well read. I appreciate that.
