DISCOURSES of EPICTETUS, translated by George Long (1800 - 1879)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/discourses-of-epictetus-by-epictetus/
Philosophical discourses of Epictetus as recorded by his affectionate student, Arrian. One main precept expounded is that we do not fear events but rather our thoughts about those events. (Summary by Christine Rottger )
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/epictetus/discourses/george-long

Target completion date: 2022-05-22

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

We need ALL of the code that shows up in that resulting box. Click the blue "Copy to clipboard" button and paste it in the post. (You can edit your first post here by clicking on the pencil icon in the upper right corner of your post.)

Ambitious, but doable. I'll set it up.

It looks to me like Epictetus was the "author", that Arrias just transcribed it. I think we'd consider the author as Epictetus.

OK, I've set it up and updated some of the items in the first post. If you disagree with anything, please let's discuss it. :)

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can modify as desired and fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

In the Introduction it says that Epictetus never wrote anything down. So,wouldnt Arrias, who wrote down Epictetus' speeches, be the author?

The thoughts are Epictetus'. If a reporter wrote down an impromptu speech by, say, Abraham Lincoln, would the author then be the reporter, or Lincoln? A business executive dictating a letter to their secretary doesn't have the secretary sign it. It's the words of the executive, not of the secretary.

Looking at it another way: would someone searching for these discourses look for Epictetus or for Arrias?
