This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue page https://librivox.org/geraldine-jewsbury-in-jerrolds-shilling-magazine-1846-47-by-geraldine-jewsbury/ Geraline Jewsbury in Jerrold's Shilling Magazine, 1846-47, by Geraldine Jewsbury (1812 - 1880)
"The most striking feature in the present day, far more than that of railways even, is the utter chaos into which all previously received principles and opinions are reduced". So begins 'Today', the first in a series of six pieces of social commentary written by Geraldine Jewsbury for Jerrold's Shilling Magazine in 1846 and 1847. Jewsbury would go on to be a prolific novelist and contributor to The Athenaeum and Household Words. In these early pieces she advances the beginnings of a philosophy that runs through her later fiction. At the centre of the collection is the two-part story of Agnes Worrall, who is abandoned to the care of a succession of uncaring relatives and eventually married off to a man she does not love. In this and other pieces in the collection, Jewsbury is a sharp critic of the substitution of respectability for moral value, and of the attitudes of her middle class contemporaries to the management of their servants and the education of the 'the lower orders'. In a world that has seemingly lost its moral bearings, she insists on a philosophy of mutual care and the elevation of the working classes through genuine education. (Summary by Phil Benson)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Annise MC and Newgatenovelist DPL - I'll need to add the source text links later, but they are all from scans of the original magazine on Hathi Trust, so no problem with PD.

The online DNB have another local life up. These man is described as a 'boatman and life-saver'. I admit to thinking more about the literary and political life of the area, so this is a window on to a different world, if you're interested:

Maybe there is a literary connection. In the Manchester Man, there is a life-saving in the River Irwell which could be based on him, or maybe it was just a common event at that time! If you look at the Irwell now, it's hard to imagine boats zipping up and down the river.

Here's a short one to get this going! This is my new sound - it may sound a bit scratchy if you use headphones, but it is supposed to be optimised for car stereo (?)

Technical note for part 1, Today, below.

Optimised for car stereo, eh? You learn something new every day. My first thought on opening up the file was that it looked different - I would have guessed that you'd applied the 'invert' feature, though that's just a first impression! I'm sure some of the other editing effects would make it look (and sound) different as well.

The bit rate should be constant and 128 kbps. If you've downloaded a new version of Audacity and need help changing your settings let me know.

Less important: The silence at the beginning is a wee bit long – could you remove about half a second?

Section 01 corrected and reuploaded. Not a new version of Audacity but a different computer and, yes, the setting was wrong. Well spotted!

I had the same question - why does it look upside down! (Needless to say this is not my doing). It is because a lot of the low end bass is removed. It sounds a bit thin and scratchy when I am editing with headphones, but it does sound a lot better on the car stereo or on a phone in a noisy environment. I guess that's because it's more clearly separated from the background noise.

Hi Anne,

Did you see my question on the Gaskell collection?

"The summary has been shortened. Was that intentional or a mistake? If there's a word limit, I can make it shorter."

It seems that the original summary is now on the Librivox page. Did you fix that. But is still abbreviated on IA.

I'm getting the same two error messages when I run the new file through Checker. Can you just check that your internet didn't conk out before the upload finished, or something like that?

This is actually a very good question, about who these recordings are for and what assumptions we make about when and where they're being listened to. I'm off to ponder a question I'll never have an answer for!

Could you try it now? I think I must have uploaded the wrong version yesterday

The car stereo part was not intentional, in fact. Actually, I asked my son if he could make me sound like Ian McKellen (as if!) and this was the result. But it does sound best in a car, which I guess makes sense in terms of target audiences.

This was the sample - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irJe30hF8JA - the Wolf Brother is a great trilogy that we listened to years ago - I think the audio version was given away free with the Guardian.

I think it is probable that a very small percentage of our recordings are listened to on the car stereo - just saying.

Interesting question. I have no idea, really.

This is from a bit of googling, but it is only the US and not Librivox. I don't even know what a smart speaker is!

"How are people in the US listening to audiobooks? Smart speakers are becoming increasingly popular from products such as Amazon Echo, Google Home or Apple HomePod. In a recent poll from the American Audiobook Publishers Association found that 60% of respondents own a smart speaker, and 46% of smart speaker owners have used it to listen to an audiobook, which is up 31% from 2018. Although the automobile is still the number one place where people listen to audiobooks, the home is where audiobooks are played for longer durations."
