On the Future of Our Educational Institutions, by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900), translated by John McFarland Kennedy (1886 - 1918)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/on-the-future-of-our-educational-institutions-by-friedrich-nietzsche-2/

These are lectures on the education system of Nietzsche's day. He states that "This book is intended for calm readers, for those who have not yet been drawn into the mad headlong rush of our hurry-scurrying age, and who do not experience any idolatrous delight in throwing themselves beneath its chariot-wheels. It is for those, therefore, who ... 'still have time.' Without any qualms of conscience they may improve the most fruitful and vigorous hours of their day in meditating on the future of our education." Nietzsche passionately summons these few: "Ye contemplative ones who cannot, with hasty glances, turn your eyes swiftly from one surface to another! Ye lofty thinkers, of whom Aristotle said that ye wander through life vacillating and inactive so long as no great honour or glorious Cause calleth you to deeds! It is you I summon! Refrain this once from seeking refuge in your lairs of solitude and dark misgivings. Bethink you that this book was framed to be your herald. When ye shall go forth to battle in your full panoply, who among you will not rejoice in looking back upon the herald who rallied you?" (Summary by jvanstan)

Although now that I've updated the MW, I have a follow-up question - should the section #s in the MW correspond to the file names? Because currently they don't.

Yes normally they do. However there are lots of examples where that isn't the case, like this where there was a preface and an introduction before the first numbered chapter. It also happens when there are long chapters that are split into separate sections. :)

Thanks much, Jennifer! I've recorded two more of these lectures and posted them :) As a professor, myself, some of these topics ring eerily true about the degeneration of the "education" system

Hope all is well!

Nice work, John. So... was Nietzsche ahead of his time in his thinking, or does the education system continue to suffer the same issues he pointed out? ... or both? :hmm:

Section 4 is PL OK.

Thanks so much, Jennifer! Sorry for my delay on these last sections - things have been a little crazier than usual these days  All is smoothing out now, so I've completed the last sections

Are you interested in DPL-ing the next Nietzsche work?

Oh yeah, I think Nietzsche was well ahead of his time with regards to the ruin of the modern education system! It still suffers significantly (probably worse than in his times) from the two base issues he builds on: (i) the expanse of the educational system at the expense of quality and (ii) the disinterestedness of both teachers and students. Just looking at Universities, regarding the first point, you go to Uni to buy a degree "for work training". Regarding point 2, professors generally care mostly about their research and students generally care about "the college experience" - or maybe I'm just an old grumpy professor ;) lol!

LOL!

Sure, I would be happy to DPL the next book.

I should be able to listen to these last few sections before the weekend.
