Man that was some horrific fighting! I always vaguely knew Iwo Jima was awful but the details were still shocking.

The whole Pacific Campaign was pretty brutal. I'm a retired Marine and generally know the broad brush strokes of this history, but it's been a good post-career history lesson in detail for me.

I can't imagine what it must have been like to be sitting in the first landing wave boats on D-Day or some of these Pacific islands knowing how long the odds were there you even make it out of the water let alone off the beach.
