Target completion date: 2021-07-01

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hannah,
I'd be happy to MC this for you. I'll get your MW set up and be back with some further info/instructions.

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.
Note that passwords for the magic window and the forum are not connected. You can use the same password in both places (I think a lot of people do), but if you change it on one system, it won't affect the password on the other system.

Next, you'll need to start entering section (or chapter) titles. I didn't see numbered chapters, so I'm not sure how you are breaking the book up or what you plan to call the various sections. When I've read books without chapters, I break the text wherever it makes sense and call them "parts". Working on that basis, I've entered the first couple section titles in the MW to get you started.

Then you are ready to start recording. When you upload a section, it's your responsibility to add the link and duration (mm:ss) to the Magic Window. Link from the uploader goes in the "listen URL" column, duration goes in the "notes" column. Then be sure to post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL so your DPL knows there is something new.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked an interesting book of a nice size, so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Thanks both

MaryAnn - I have now added all the section numbers in. The book doesn't have chapters so I thought I would do around 9-10 pages per section. I have started recording and this is probably on the cautious end of what's needed but I think that's ok! I am just editing the sections I have recorded and will upload shortly.

Thanks!

That sounds good Hannah. We'll move over to going solo and we can post an advert for a DPL once you get a couple of sections uploaded.

Hannah, you may need to hit the Post Reply button and add an explicit post indicating that you have uploaded a section to alert your DPL that you have now uploaded some material to listen to. As long as your DPL has checked "Notify me when a reply is posted" they'll then get an email prompting them to look at this topic.
I'm so glad you're recording this as a solo, as this novel so richly deserves the kind of reading you will give it.

Peter,
Thanks for sharing the tip. At this point we don't have a DPL ... are you interested?

Ah, silly me! I didn't realise, but of course there's currently a ~ before the project title.

It would be a pleasure to act as DPL for this project. So far I've only done a little reading with Librivox. It would be good to broaden my participation, and I can't think of a better project. I'll read up on the proof listening guidelines immediately - and yes, please, count me in.

Great Peter. Thank you.

I've added you as DPL. It appears that you have already served as a BC, so that means you have a password to access the MW. If not, let me know and I'll send instructions.

Our reader has requested "standard" pl.

Enjoy!

Sections 01 to 03 are PL OK. A superb reading worthy of this transcendentally beautiful novel, Hannah. I feel very lucky to be the first listener!

I doubt this is a major issue, but I notice that in the first three sections your name, as the reader, appears at both the head and the tail. As I read the template instructions, they seem to imply that your name should appear either at the head or the tail, but not both. My own suggestion would be that you proceed exactly as you are doing now with future sections, except that you omit the "Read by" bit from future introductions - but that's up to you. Personally I don't think the issue is of such importance that you should make any changes to the introductions of files you've already uploaded.

For what it's worth, as a listener I like the textual break points you've selected so far. The need to break a novel like this, that is written without any overt chapter structure, into readable and yet logical chunks adds another level of challenge for you as the reader.

Hi there

Thanks for your kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Thanks for spotting me saying my name twice - clearly I'm over eager on that score! I have removed the first instance from the three I have just uploaded. I'm glad the spacing is working and that you're enjoying my reading :)

Very much so!
Sections 04 to 06 are PL OK.
I'm finding it interesting how readily my mind accepts Woolfe's transitions from one thread to another when I'm hearing this read aloud, compared to when I read this silently to myself off the page. In the latter context, my critical mind is perhaps a little more active, and the transitions seem a little more prominent and "arty". When I'm listening, I'm in a deeper state of immersion, less "thinky" about what's going on.

Fab, thanks! You're so quick off the mark I feel like I need to get on with the recordings!

Really interesting reflection on reading v listening, I also think it feels more natural reading it out than reading it in my head! (for the most part - a few sentences I've had to read a few times before understanding them!!)
