Citadel of the Green Death, by Robert Emmett McDowell (1914 - 1975)

Adopted by brownrottger Jan 26, 2022

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/citadel-of-the-green-death-by-robert-emmett-mcdowell/

Volunteers outside the USA: Robert Emmett McDowell died in 1975. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
At the coldly gleaming Experimental Station they flung this choice in Outlaw Joel Hakkyt's teeth: "Grinding, endless slavery on Asgard, that Alpha Centauri hell—or a writhing, screaming guinea-pig's death here?" He chose Asgard, naturally. But what was natural—on Asgard? (Summary by Robert Emmett Mcdowell)

Target completion date: 2021-06-30

Prooflistening level: Special: Standard, PLUS please check volumes of the files. The reader is unable to measure volume.
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Since this isn't PD for me in Canada, I won't be MC'ing this. But I did want to wish you a happy project. 8-)

(I took the liberty of modifying your PL type request to mention the need to check volume. This will save your future MC a headache. ;) Feel free to modify the wording on that part.)

Looks good! after knocking out the Jester's role in Aladdin I get going on it. I have not found any way to check the volume of my recordings. None of the checkers I have come across work on my Chromebook. I don't know if you or the proof-listener would do this, but if either one of you could check the volume if my submissions and let me know what you find I do have a way to adjust it o where it needs to be.

Hi, Gerald,

This new release from Project Gutenberg looks such a good choice! As a science fiction fan myself, I especially like these 'older' stories, plus Outlaw Joel Hakkyt sounds a most intriguing character...(And the art on those old covers is simply priceless!)

I would have SO liked to DPL for this project but unfortunately I have no way to check volume. (Alas, fact is, most of the time I work on a borrowed computer under promise of absolutely NOT downloading any software  ).

Best of luck with this thrilling new project!

P.S. I must confess I have already started to read the story on the PG site. :D

I am able to check volume, if you'd still like to volunteer.

I use the Audacity extension for chrome. It doesn't have all the features of the full version. I tried using compression on my latest submission and am waiting the get the results. From what I have been told that might be all I need

I don't know if the effects are available but I wrote this today for another thread. It might help you if it is compatible:

The Loudness Normalisation effect will bring the volume up to the right level (it's only in the latest version of Audacity so you might need to upgrade).

Run the following 3 effects in this order:
Normalize (DC ticked, peak ticked -0.0, stereo unticked)
Compressor (Threshold -14, Noise Floor -25, Ratio 7:1, Attack 0.5, Release 1.9, Make up to 0dB ticked, compress peaks unticked)
Loudness Normalisation ('perceived loudness', -20 LUFS, he two checkboxes don't matter).
Female Scripture Characters by William Jay (1769 - 1853) 97% 1 left! "The Penitent Sinner Part 2"
St. Augustine (Vol.6 Psalms 126-150) 96% 2 left!

I don't have loudness normalization.
I have done fairly well using the compressor. Would that do better if I normalize the file first?

If it's likely to be very soft to begin with, normalising at the start will give you better results with the compressor. The more heavily you compress (I use 8:1), the more even the output file will be (though it may be noticiable as 'compressed'). If it is very even, then you might be able to normalise again after the compression and get very similar volume ranges each time. I used 8:1 compression and normalised to -3 afterwards and that fell in the correct overall range. Might work for you.
