The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Volume 1, by Ida M. Tarbell (1857 - 1944)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

Volume 1 of Ida Tarbell's biography of Lincoln covers his life from his boyhood to his election to the presidency in 1860. Tarbell, in addition to her famous work in investigative journalism (in particular, her influential expose of The Standard Oil Company), was a noted Lincoln scholar. Her writings on Lincoln, originally published as articles in McClure's Magazine, were highly acclaimed. (Summary by Ciufi Galeazzi)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Okay, here we go! Section one is in the MW!
The last 4 chapters in the book will be divided into two sections each. Until then, we should be fine .

Section 2 is now also in the MW.
Please note : the book has part of a sentence left out in the page break between pp. 20 and 21. It reads, " His trousers were of roughly (page break) his cap a coonskin." I did not quite know what to do with this. I assume his pants were of roughly woven or tanned or sewn something or other, but I did not want to guess. I read it as, " His trousers were rough, his cap a coonskin." That seemed to keep the intent of the sentence without extrapolating too much.

Yes, I know I overthought that.

It should read -

"His trousers were of roughly tanned deer-skin, his foot-covering a home-made moccasin, his cap a coon-skin;"

Section 1 is PL OK

I hadn't heard of the story of his almost drowning. My brain thought, "How do you grow up in the wilderness and not know how to swim?"
