Pan Michael: An Historical Novel of Poland, the Ukraine, and Turkey by Sienkiewicz, by Henryk Sienkiewicz (1856 - 1916), translated by Jeremiah Curtin (1835 - 1906)
This is the third part of the Sienkiewicz trilogy. It is loosely based on the politics of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
It is better know in English as 'Fire In The Steppe'.
(Summary by David Granville Young)

Target completion date: 2024-12-31

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This will be my first solo recording for Librovox, my second recording of Sienkiewicz in English.

I thought the form had recorded my catalogue name when I filled it in, but in any case it is David Granville Young.

It probably did but I just wanted to be sure. :D As a soloist you are also the Book Coordinator for t his project, or BC. You are responsible for maintaining the magic window which means putting in the chapter titles, putting your uploaded files there and stuff like that. Here is a little video that may help. https://youtu.be/_cDPSmlTjGM Ask if any thing is confusing.

Unless there are any objections from the Librivox team, I will be using the same pronunciation protocols that I employ with The Deluge.

For example:
'Michael' is pronounced 'Michał', 'Cracow' is 'Kraków', 'Kmita' is 'Kmicic' and 'Zagloba' is 'Zagłoba'. However, 'The Vistula' is not changed to 'The Wisła' and 'Danzig' is not changed to 'Gdańsk' as these are significantly different from their anglicised versions.

Where I find something in the online text which appears to be an error in the process of scanning the text, I'll check it against the Polish original and, if it is an error, I'll record the corrected version. I will then post a message about the correction when I upload the audio file in question.

That sounds like a good way to handle pronunciation and scanning errors.

May I be DPL?

By the way I took the liberty of shortening the filename to panmichael_etc I hope that's ok. I don't know if you noticed but it was long as a railroad..

Hi. Yes, I am still on it, but it was slowed down slightly because just as I was recovering from a throat infection I picked up a lung illness which set me back a few weeks.

It should get started in the next fortnight.

Just to double check, the opening text for the first chapter will be this, unless I hear otherwise:

"Chapter 1 of Pan Michał: An Historical Novel of Poland, the Ukraine, and Turkey. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit librivox.org." "Read by David Granville Young." "Pan Michał: An Historical Novel of Poland, the Ukraine, and Turkey, by Henryk Sienkiewicz, translated by Jeremiah Curtin. Chapter 1"

The pronunciation of 'Michael' has changed to the one which I will be using throughout the text.

If this matches what is in the first post, then yep, that's what you read. :D For the subsuquent chapters you can use the optional shorter intro as shown in the first post also.

Here is the first chapter, the shortest of the project (in the original it is an introduction while in Curtin's translation it is Chapter 1):

https://librivox.org/uploads/xx-nonproject/panmichael_01_sienkiewicz_128kb.mp3

Length 5 minutes and 9 seconds.

Hi David! Chapter 1 is PL OK!

Like Phil said, as a Soloist you are your own Book-Coordinator, in charge of updating the Magic Window. I have added the first section as an example. Check out Phil's video on how to create a password for the Magic Window https://youtu.be/_cDPSmlTjGM , and see if you can add the rest as you upload them (section title, duration, link, status to Ready for PL)

By the way, Phil probably forgot to update the first post, or some other mix-up, but the MC to choose when uploading is philchenevert instead of XX

Phil, would you like me to move the file to your folder or you can do it? It's PL OK so it doesn't need re-uploading.
