At 10:23, I hear omission of "Letter 27," not critical, but you do read off the letter heads.

My best,

Pam

At last, Section 11:

This Marquis de Sessac "who is back, will have a situation in the army, and will probably soon be
presented to the king" is the Marquis de S of Section 2 who had to flee the country for having used
false packs of cards and having sent everybody broke. He was later involved in the Affair of the Poisons.

Post Script - I sent a friend in France a blooper of myself trying to read 'fringes' in this sentence is Section 12 (it's in the blooper thread):

'In one night all the gold ornaments and fringes were stolen from the state apartment, from the gallery to the
chapel'.

She has just told me that "fringes" are clothes/gear. She thinks that
the robbers got off with the gold and royal garments'

Friends (plural) in the French editions.

Were you aware that Cardinal de Retz in "The last four years of his life [the period we are reading just now] gave evidence of a remarkable spiritual conversion. In 1675 he became a penitent at the Benedictine Monastery of Saint-Mihiel". He was a relative by marriage of Mme. de S.

The Grand Duchess of whom Mme. de S writes to her daughter that she "will have had too much of" was the consort of the Grand Duke of Tuscany and an outrageous libertine. She was banished and I guess stayed with the Grignans en route to Paris. Confined to a convent, she had threatened to kill the abbess with a hatchet and a pistol.

Thanks! Your notes add a lot!

And I had no idea about Cardinal de Retz being a good or a pious guy!

At 11:35 I have read "cousin" where the text says "brother" (Mme de S had no siblings)

Hi Pam,

Some puzzling references in this. Maybe you knew that Guidons are part of the military culture - to represent the commander’s presence or as a sight-point on the field. I'm not sure, but I think that Mme. de S's son had to settle for having the third most important guidon in his regiment and that money (guidonage) had been paid to get him a better guidon ?

Best,

Barbara
