presented to the king" is the Marquis de S of Section 2 who had to flee the country for having used
false packs of cards and having sent everybody broke. He was later involved in the Affair of the Poisons.

Post Script - I sent a friend in France a blooper of myself trying to read 'fringes' in this sentence is Section 12 (it's in the blooper thread):
'In one night all the gold ornaments and fringes were stolen from the state apartment, from the gallery to the
chapel'.
She has just told me that "fringes" are clothes/gear. She thinks that

Some puzzling references in this. Maybe you knew that Guidons are part of the military culture - to represent the commander’s presence or as a sight-point on the field. I'm not sure, but I think that Mme. de S's son had to settle for having the third most important guidon in his regiment and that money (guidonage) had been paid to get him a better guidon ?
