Hi Barbara,

Section 16 is PL OK.

The guidon is a mystery, indeed. I understood better the allusion to Montesquieu.

My best,

And now, Section 17:

I liked the bit about the little girl who knows only Les Rochers - we've met her before. A daughter of one of the estate workers I suppose.

"Quanto" is Mme de Montespan

You know of Mme de Brinvilliers but, to add some detail:

How would you visualise the beautiful daughter? I thought "elegant, tall, imperious" but she is the most delicate looking blonde china doll. Mme. de S is blonde too, as is Mme de Montespan. I am having to adjust my notions.

I'm googling so as to get more background on the cast of thousands in these letters. The internet is wonderful:

From the Letters of Anne Thackeray Ritchie (daughter of William Thackeray). She is writing of a visit to Down House in 1882

`At breakfast he [Charles Darwin] appeared, having breakfasted, and sat in an arm-chair and talked about Madame de Sevigne. He said when they were all young, they knew her letters so well that they nicknamed their friends by the names of her characters, the obliging Haqueville and so on.'

Wonderful!

And, of course, there is always Marcel's grandmother.

Thanks!

I think "ferula" might be "rod" as in discipline.

Hi Barbara,

I always thought of myself more as a pedant than as a nerd!

I think you're right about the evolution of meaning of 'faire sa court'. Thanks!

However, the translator was wrong about the writer with the 'pitiful style'. He was no relation to Mademoiselle de Méri (who was a relation of Mme. de S). His name is M. de Méré.

Best,

Barbara
