Hi Pam,

This is the same Cessac who had already had to flee France back in an early Section after winning against the King and the other courtiers by playing with a false deck. LeSage said in evidence that Cessac had asked him for a secret to win at cards with the king.

Do you think "the gentlest and most agreeable medicines" could have contained laudanum?

Hi Barbara,

Section 23 is PL OK.

Yes, definitely, though the recipes for laudanum after Paracelsus were not simplified to a 10% tincture with alcohol until 1676 by Sydenham in 1676.

Hi Barbara,

Section 25 is PL OK.

What an all star line up!

Madame de Longueville was, with de Retz, one of the greatest Frondeurs of them all and an unfaithful lover of La Rochefoucauld.

I have never been to Versailles, but I did visit Fouquet's lovely Vaux le Vicomte--the chateau that got him thrown into prison for life when his visitor, Louis XIV, realized how much money he had to be embezzling to afford it.

My best,

Pam

Thanks Pam.

I did visit Versailles, in fact half a dozen famous palaces (I was young and had stamina). I had never heard of Vaux le Vicomte then, alas.

It's like a tiny little Versailles with gardens by Le Nôtre.

Incredible woman. And, another blonde! "Silver blonde" she is described as on one site.

Best,

Mme de S surprises me - this Mme de Dreux was tried for having poisoned: Monsieur Pajot, Monsieur de Varennes; one of her lovers; one of her competing lovers of the Duke de Richelieu; the attempted murders of her husband and of Anne de Richelieu (wife of the Duke de Richelieu); and of having ordered poisoned wine from La Voisin.

An order for her re-arrest was ordered in 1681. She left the country to avoid arrest, and upon the appeal from both her husband and her lover, she was spared any punishment for her crimes.

Several members of her family were among her judges and there was outrage among the common people at the leniency with which she was treated.

"Mlle" du Plessis and "Mlle" de Launay not "Mme" as mistranslated.

Hi Barbara,

Section 27 is PL OK.

Is this Arnauld in exile the Jansenist Arnauld?
