Chapter 8 is ready. I have made some changes from Gutenberg's text, as I believe Gutenberg botched the transcription from the original, rather than Verne made these mistakes.

At 8:07, I have corrected the number to 78,514, to agree with the chapter title (you see why I suspect Gutenberg).

At 9:09, it's apparent that they repeated the final clause of the preceding case, which makes no sense in this one, so I have fixed it to give the intended situation of falling back to Earth.

At around 19:13, I have corrected which item weighs more where.

I am not quite sure of the intent of the text 2 sentences before this, where Nicholl is talking about artillery shells falling back... so I have not changed that, but I suspect it is another mistake.

Anyway, we are recovered from the "gaseous overdose" and enjoying microgravity for a while! As Verne had no "Vomit Comet" as an example, he would not have known of the sensations!

Chapter 9 is one big whoopsie! (And please be advised - I corrected the math at 12:03. Cursed be the non-engineering knaves who leave off the units they are calculating in! From "yards per second" to "leagues per hour" is not explicit... especially when considering there are at LEAST 3 different known lengths for a league... and three more for a French league!!!)

In Chapter 10, we recover from the shock of discovering that the gun has missed the Moon. And let's not seriously consider the train wreck they would be in if they actually got to the Moon, since Barbicane has figured on touching down at more than 8 or 9 times the speed of an express train!

For myself, I wish Verne would make up his mind, and choose either leagues or miles for measurement, instead of mixing them.

I discovered I had uploaded Chapters 10 & 11 without normalizing their volume. Now I have done so and re-uploaded those chapters. The links remain as before, but there are now older versions on the server. Just saying, in case anyone (Annise?) notices!

And here is Chapter 15, which is nettling poor Michel no end, and not incidentally, threatening to end their lives in multiple ways! At least they got a peek at something it took the Russians until 1959 to show us - the back side of the Moon:

I have been refreshing myself on some scientific history... Verne was touting the absolute latest theory with his talk of "luminous ether". James Clerk Maxwell had just published (probably during this book's writing) a treatise on electromagnetism that posited that light is propagated into such a medium. This thought persisted until Einstein in the early 1900's showed that light was a statistical summation of individual particles (photons) that each expressed energy.

Taking the latest science and making a story from it - that's often a big part of hard science fiction now!
