[COMPLETE] Cavour by Evelyn Martinengo-Cesaresco - dc
It’s amazing just to think about an eighteen-year-old Henry James!

It occurred to me at last to have a look at a map of Italy during our period and a great light shone.

PL OK again Pam. I'm beginning to get a handle on this with your help and that of maps. The plot is beginning to move in the direction of Henry James's earliest essays.pnagami wrote: ↑March 15th, 2021, 8:32 am Hi Barbara,

Talking of Hapsburgs - I came across some useless but entertaining information about a daughter of Otto v Hapsburg, last Crown Prince, in whom the born-to-rule gene has manifested itself. She is a Swedish parliamentarian (Moderate Party) and bears the improbable surname of Douglas, having married into Clan Douglas (Swedish branch!). I find it enchanting that one of her husband's names is Archibald.
Best,
Barbara
Hi Barbara,
Who ever knew that there was a Swedish Clan Douglas! Amazing.
Thanks!

In an 1872 article Henry James was being scathing about Austrian Botzen (Bolzano) and other "German" cities - including even Heidelberg and Nüremberg. "Germany is ugly." I wonder if it was his Italian patriotism that sent him a bit over the top.
Best,
Barbara
