Hello, Gill; Section 16:

The accent shift is noticeable but not troubling. It's odd that the spelling of his non-English words is generally (always?) French ... which is what you shifted towards later in his interview.

I'd have ignored the first change below, but have included it as there are some other corrections to make.
Peter

***

24.51 "or I might go out in the day and show the sun. Read as "and" instead of "or".

28.20 "Old boy, what are you looking at?' ['Jupiter,' says I. 'What's that?' says he. REPEATED] 'A planet you may call it,' says I.

29.49 "She was a heavy lusty woman, and I had to shove her up with my shoulder ..." Read as ".. a very lusty woman..."

34.42 "The capital required to start a telescope in the streets all depends on the quantity of the object glass." You've corrected the obvious typo ("quality" instead of "quantity"), but didn't delete "quantity".

Re-edited Section 16 (39:56)

We just crossed paths there! Sorry about that. Thank you so much for catching all those fluffs.
As I said in my edited post, I've decided to keep "quantity" as is, but all other changes made.

Yes, I suppose Mayhew spoke some French but little or no Italian. I'm not sure I would do any better if I re-recorded it, to be honest.

Edited section 16 now PL'd okay.

Sorry; I'd forgotten your earlier note about quantity when I PL'd the file. I'm a bit inexperienced at PLing!

Section 19 (27:23)

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/londonlabour3_19_mayhew_128kb.mp3

The Street Risley, pages 94 - 98

Section 18 is on its way. I'm just checking about one of those intrepid liaisons in French.

Section 20 (38:22)
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/londonlabour3_20_mayhew_128kb.mp3

The Strong Man, pages 98 - 104

(I almost left my typo there: "The String Man" - anything's possible, I suppose.
What kind of act would that be? :hmm: )

I have to say I'm enjoying not having any of those interminable tables I had in Volume II!

Section 17 PL okay.

I tried to find out more about Lardner's micrometer, which measured 24 inches along a flea, but gave up after a while, as Dionysius Lardner wrote a lot of books. I can sort of see what he means, though; at this magnification, it would be two foot long.

Yes, the tables are tedious and complicated to read, and must be soporific to listen to.

The String Man could be a street entertainer who does cat's cradles and other tricks .. there surely must have been at least one of them, judging by some of the street people you and I have encountered.

Peep Shows & Acrobat, or Street-Posturer.

Nothing rude! Just what they called those magic lantern shows, as I expect you know.

Section 18 PL okay.

It was interesting reading that little eye-witness account of the start of the French revolution.

Thanks, Peter.
Yes, I can see how Mayhew got distracted form his main purpose in interviewing these interesting people. I wonder what other tidbits the Street Risley told him.

Section 21 (42:03)

and that makes it 25% done!

Section 20 PL okay; he's certainly become diverted from his London poor!

How on earth did that man survive his strong man tricks?

I'd not heard of Risley before; there's a small article on wikipedia about the act, with a link to the man that originated it.

Wait until you hear from the fire eater. Apparently red sealing wax is tastier than the other colours.

Section 21 PL okay. For some reason, I'm not able to log into the MW to mark the section okay; I'll try again tomorrow.

EDIT: I've updated the MW
