He probably did. I think it was very influential in its day.

Punch is obviously the basis of a lot of pantomime "nonsense" as well. I hadn't realised. We don't have them in Scotland, I don't think.

Punch 3 including the whole play! Sorry about the screeching Punch's voice. You may want to turn your volume down a bit.
It's a bit longer but I thought I'd keep the whole play together. (Of course, I mean the "dramatic hopera.")

I'll probably have to give my voice a rest for a few days now.

Section 11 PL okay.

Congratulations; that must have been incredibly hard work.

It's funny how the sense of humour changes over time. Not just Punch, too; I feel very uncomfortablewith the "humour" of Charley Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy.

It was particularly hard on my cat who couldn't understand why I was screeching when she was trying to sleep!

Section 12 PL okay.

I wonder what happened to all those Fantoccini figures? They sound wonderfully intricate.

I looked them up and found something similar, although they don't seem to be called that any more. I have a memory of having seen them one time on TV - especially the skeleton who falls apart then puts himself back together again. Nice old-fashioned family entertainment.

Section 13 PL okay; word-perfect!

We used to make a guy and go out collecting when I was a kid. You don't see them today (at least, I've not seen any in London for years).

Thanks, Peter.
I apologise to you and to the listening 'world' en masse for the atrocious accent coming up in Section 16. It does start off fairly Italian-esque but it seems to transform into - well, I don't know quite what. If you think it's really awful and reads to be re-done, please let me know. Coming soon.

Edited Section 16 (39:59)
Exhibitor of Mechanical Figures & The Telescope Exhibitor, pages 74 - 83

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/londonlabour3_16_mayhew_128kb.mp3

Sorry, Peter, if you'd already downloaded the file. I remembered I was checking on a probable typo at 34:48 (page 82)
"The capital required to start a telescope in the streets all depends upon the quantity of the object-glass, from 3l. to 50l. for the object-glass alone."
- I'm pretty sure he means "quality".

I've left it as is because it may have been a mistake on the part of the interviewee, along the lines of "prosperity" for posterity etc., rather than by Mayhew.

Section 17 (32:31)
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/londonlabour3_17_mayhew_128kb.mp3

Exhibitor of the Microscope (pages 83 - 88).

EDIT: Forgot to say there were a couple of typos here -

19:40 "One on occasion" --> "on one occasion"
20:02 "He told me was a doctor" --> "He told me he was a doctor"
(These are both okay in other versions so they may not have been typos by Mayhew.)
