Don't feel pressured to PL these quickly. I'm just on a roll at the moment, not making too many mistakes to edit. It'll probably slow down soon.

Section 55 PL okay.

What an awful system (the publican and others profiting from the ballast heavers). I wonder if it was changed in the same way as "the Office" was created for the coal heavers. ... and I wonder if Mayhew tried to interview some of the publicans and other profiteers.

I'm working my way through Mayhew's biography only slowly; as it's a heavy paperback, I can't carry it with me when I go out, as I can do with fiction. It will be interesting to see if it mentions any response to the publication of London Labour.

So appalling. Mayhew often calls these circumstances "evil" and rightly so.

"...it is worse than idle to talk of “the elevation of the masses,” and most unjust, to use the mildest term, to condemn the working men for sins into which they are positively forced. To preach about the virtues of teetotalism to the poor, and yet to allow a system to continue that compels them to be drunk before they can get work—not to say bread—is surely a mockery." (p284)

I wonder if his work on London Labour was a trigger to his mental health problems? His experiences must have been so cumulatively traumatic.

Section 56

1829-1833 ... but they’ll have tow-row out of it,--that’s dry money [and with a repeat of "that’s dry money"] ** This is a repeat of the earlier section 1715-1720

I see you've left his "tow-tow" and "tow-row" as they're printed ... that seems the best solution.

Section 60 Another very minor edit, but it does change the meaning slightly.
0059 ... and indeed all but hewn timber. Read as "or indeed"
EDIT: Time stamp should be 1.29 (the original was from the increased tempo file I use when PLing)

How do you speed up the file you're listening to? My cat did it for me once(!) but I don't know what she pressed.

I use Effect/Change Tempo, set to 50%. That's about as much as I can change it, and still follow the text comfortably. I keep two Audacity versions of the mp3, one normal and one sped up. When I listen to the speeded up file, I note the time of any errors; when I'm done, I calculate the original times (adding 50%), and check against the original file to make sure I have it right.
