Just some optional edits on a couple of skips:
Chapter 4 is PL OK!
Chapter 5:
a short skip around 2:42 "in either cheek"
Chapter 6:
a skip around 8:23 "I had time to recover myself before he observed me".
Chapter 7 is PL OK!
Chapter 8 is PL OK!
I don't think I like this Damoreau, although, when he talks about cuisine, he reminds me of Bertha's good-natured uncle.

Chapters 9-14 are PL OK except one skip, a bit more prominent, in Chapter 11 around 20:45 "And we had four children and mother to take care of"
I ran into a problem in Chapter 16. There are a few words obscured at the bottom of pages 143 and 144. These portions of these pages are unreadable on all the online versions of the book
I had to track down a physical copy of the novel to get something I could read. Here is a copy:

Your instincts are correct on Colonel Damoreau. He is very much the villain of this text. And, yes, "Fairy Fingers" was written twenty years later, but Mowatt does come back to the sin of gluttony in a much more good-humored way with Bertha's uncle in that book. There was also a Count Damoreau in that novel too... I wondered if he was a relative of the fellow in this book...?

As much as I braced myself, I was not expecting that
A few notes on skips in Chapter 5:
0:42 "over the heads of our friends"
0:54 "never playing with infantine glee, and often refusing food"
1:02 "her disease is an internal and slowly consuming fever"
2:10 "Mrs Willard's chamber"
5:43 "of a female figure"
Then Chapters 6 and 7 are PL OK.

I know, right? Even knowing what was coming, I had to stop the recording multiple times because I just broke down and sobbed. The narrator was much more calm and philosophical than I was. Every time she described a new person's reaction, I just fell apart -- even cynical Mrs. Willard... perhaps especially her. That baby was the only being she really seemed to love unselfishly.Rapunzelina wrote: ↑October 16th, 2020, 5:21 am As much as I braced myself, I was not expecting that
