Evelyn; or A Heart Unmasked by Anna Cora Mowatt Ritchie (1819 - 1870).

Evelyn is a two-volume novel told in an epistolary style – alternating between letters from the point of view of a trusted, unmarried female friend of the young, naïve heroine of the novel and those of the feckless adventurer who decides that he must seduce the beautiful Evelyn.

The author, actress/novelist/playwright Anna Cora Mowatt, was a fan of the works of Fredericka Bremer (early feminist author, sometimes called the “Swedish Jane Austen”). This narrative is heavily influenced by that writer’s style. Like Mowatt’s hit comedy, “Fashion,” the plot centers on the misadventures of nouveau riche family social climbing in New York society of the late 1830’s. Whereas the play was comedy, the novel turns towards tragedy. The author still spices her narrative with strong doses of social satire, however, and gives us many revealing glimpses of everyday life of New Yorkers of the early 19th century.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hooray! Glad to be working with you again!

This is a 2 volume novel -- Not sure if this is the correct way to format

Looks fine. Some readers choose to put the volume number in the MW only before the first chapter (Chapter 1) of each volume and not before the chapter number in subsequent chapters (2, 3,...) of each volume. Either way is fine though.

Now that the team is complete, I'll move the thread over to the Going Solo forum to keep the Launch Pad tidy.

I think this is the quickest launch I've ever had for a project! :D

When I get to Volume 2 of this novel, how do I number the files? Do I just go to the next number for Chapter 1 of Volume 2? evelyn_21_mowatt_128kb.mp3?

Yes, always use the section number so the files are numbered sequentially.

Here we go!

For Chapter 1's intro, the phrase "For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org" is missing.
Then there's a skip at around 21:24, on the phrase "or the pangs of a rebuking conscience".

In Chapter 2, a short repetition, around 13:43, "would give his note"
By the way - an optional edit - I noticed a different word used, around 13:12, text is "Walter himself and Evelyn", instead of if Evelyn.
Two skips, around 14:30 "It is a study worthy the wisest of us, and I confess myself an apt student"
and around 14:39 "You will wonder, dear Elizabeth, at Mrs Willard's communicativeness"
A very short skip around 16:02 "to regret that she has no longer..."
Check to see if you'd like to shorten the pause just before "End of Chapter 2"; it felt a bit longer than usual to me.

Needless to say, so enjoyable reading!

In Chapter 3, around 1:53 in the recording, a line was skipped (page 24)
"Just six months ago, the beauteous Evelyn was placed at the head of a splendid establishment,"
and a short skip around current 36:06 "convinced Mr Merrit of the necessity of action"
