Hi Yuqing and Mark, I've been doing a bit of research on Jean Christophe, and I am getting a strong sense that "Volume 1" may in fact be a misnomer. I just took a look at what Gutenberg labels "Volume 2" (in French, only), and it begins with what in our version we read in "Revolt Part 1". And if you look at the Wikipedia page for the book, it describes 10 volumes, but the volume titles listed are exactly the same as the titles of the 10 major subdivisions of Cannan's translation. Add to this evidence that it would be somewhat awesome if Rolland were to have written 10 volumes comparable in length to this translation. So, question: should I drop "Volume 1" from the introduction from now on?

So, the entire Revolt part is Vol.2 now? Then maybe not just drop "Volume 1," but replace it with "Volume 2"? The book description would have to be changed too. Sec.37,38 intros would have to be updated.

From what I could gather from Wikipedia, the first 4 sections (Dawn, Morning, Youth and Revolt) are usually grouped as Volume 1 (Jean-Christophe); the next 3 exist as Vol. 2, followed by the last 3 as Vol. 3.

So is it alright to keep the intro as it is for all sections?

Hmmm...and in the Finnish translations, they seem to be referring to 6 volumes. Confusion reigns. Perhaps, in the interest of keeping things simple, your advice is best; i.e., keep the intro as is. Sorry I stirred the soup
