yes, that's probably it.

It threw me a bit that the "e" is short like in "elevator", and I would pronounce it myself with a long e like in e-bike. (long and short as to the length of the vowel...but then again, the pronunciation is like in the words I gave too... OH my, I'm not good at explaining what I mean.

)

Yes, either pronunciation is correct. I always say er-uh as opposed to eer-uh. Possibly American vs British pronunciation, but maybe just regional. Merriam Webster and Dictionary.com give both options.

Good to know! I tend towards British pronunciation with the online dictionary I use.

The chapter concerning protoplasm is PL OK!

It was fascinating in its outdatedness.

"Looks as if there are cells everywhere"
"Why does this protoplastic speck become a human and that one a dog?"

But then again, he does recognise that the basic mechanisms must be the same, he just doesn't know what they are.
Fascinating book!

Yes, I agree. It is always fascinating to read how the understanding of biological and biochemical transformations evolved. He is on firmer ground in subsequent chapters where dissection provides more macroscopic evidence of structure and function.

Section 18 added. Be forewarned there is some Latin and German in this section which I am fairly certain I have probably mangled beyond recognition!
