Chapters on Evolution by Andrew Wilson (1852 - 1912).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/chapters-on-evolution-by-andrew-wilson/

Dr. Andrew Wilson FRSE was a Scottish physiologist and zoologist and lecturer in zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the preface of this book, he writes: "...the chief aim of the work is to present in a popular and readily understood form, the chief evidences of the evolution of living beings. In this view, whilst I have been content to assume the reality of that process, I have also endeavoured to marshal the more prominent facts of zoology and botany, which serve to prove that evolution, broadly considered is not merely a name for an unknown tendency in nature, but is an actual factor in the work of moulding the life with which the universe teems." ( J. M. Smallheer)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/chaptersonevolut00wilsuoft/
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Prospective DPLs - Some of the chapters in this book are quite long. Therefore, I plan split the text at logical points as I go along into ~20 minute sections. :)

PL OK.

I found it funny that he laughs about people who say that whales are fishes. And in the next paragraph he lumps in the whales with the kangaroos "because mammals". Aren't the kangaroos a different type of animals, with their pouches and everything?

They are both Mammals (Class: Mammalia) which includes 3 infraclasses - Monotremes, Marsupials and Placentals. He has much more to say about the kangaroo and other marsupials later in this chapter. Stay tuned...:)
