How to Succeed in the Christian Life by Reuben Archer Torrey (1856 - 1928).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/how-to-succeed-in-the-christian-life-by-reuben-archer-torrey/
I have for years felt the need of a book to put in the hands of those beginning the Christian life that would tell them just how to make a complete success of this new life upon which they were entering. I could find no such book, so I have been driven to write one. This book aims to tell the young convert just what he most needs to know. I hope that pastors and evangelists and other Christian workers may find it a good book to put in the hands of young converts. I hope that it may also prove a helpful book to many who have long been Christians but have not made that headway in the Christian life that they long for. (From the Introduction by Reuben Archer Torrey)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/55743
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin
  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!

"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"How to Succeed in the Christian Life, by Reuben Archer Torrey. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of How to Succeed in the Christian Life by Reuben Archer Torrey. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of How to Succeed in the Christian Life, by Reuben Archer Torrey. "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename howtosucceedinthechristianlife_##_torrey_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. howtosucceedinthechristianlife_01_torrey_128kb.mp3)

This is set up. A couple notes:

- You can say "R. A. Torrey" in the intros/outros instead of "Reuben Archer" if you like. I think he's better known as R. A.

- As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, use your personalized login and password to get into the uploader. Then in the magic window, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

Holler if you have questions! I'll move this to Going Solo once I know you've got access to the MW.

Assuming that's not a problem with the soloist, I've added you in. :)

Tricia or Devorah, I had a quick question about the Introduction. I planned to add it in with the first section because it is very short but wondered how I should do the intro for it. Would it be the following:

"Chapter 1 of How to Succeed in the Christian Life. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
"Recording by Dorcas Oliver."

"How to Succeed in the Christian Life, by R.A. Torrey. Introduction."
Read Introduction.

Chapter 1. Beginning Right.

Please let me know if there is a standard way or something you think works better!

I think I'd do:

"Introduction and Chapter 1 of How to Succeed in the Christian Life.

Chapter 1. Beginning Right.
...

"End of Introduction and Chapter 1."

The intro/outro, where you say what the chapter is, is for the blind or others who cannot see the file name on their device. So I'd be sure to say "introduction" in the very beginning.

Great! I look forward to hearing it!

As soloist, you don't need to post the link in the thread, because you can just put it directly in the MW. Then just post when there's a chapter ready. Scroll up a bit and re-read what Tricia wrote about how to edit the MW. :)
