A Christmas Carol In Prose; Being A Ghost Story Of Christmas by Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870).

Marley was dead, to begin with...until his ghost visits his miserly business partner, Ebenezer Scrooge, with a dire warning. Will Scrooge be able to change his ways, or is it already too late for him? ( Geoffrey Venin)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/46
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of A Christmas Carol In Prose; Being A Ghost Story Of Christmas. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"A Christmas Carol In Prose; Being A Ghost Story Of Christmas, by Charles Dickens. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of A Christmas Carol In Prose; Being A Ghost Story Of Christmas by Charles Dickens. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of A Christmas Carol In Prose; Being A Ghost Story Of Christmas, by Charles Dickens. "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename christmascarol_##_dickens_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. christmascarol_01_dickens_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader (use your own workflow login/password)
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: TriciaG
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

    Any questions?

Hi. Welcome to LibriVox.

A popular choice - there are already 11 versions of this in the catalog. However, if you don't mind being number 12, you are welcome to record your own version.

However, before starting a solo project, please complete and get an OK on a one-minute test to check your technical settings. It's not an audition, but to simply confirm that your files meet our requirements. Post your test in the Listeners Wanted Forum and an experienced LVer will have a listen and check the specs for you. It would be a shame to record a whole section, only to have to redo it because of some simple setting that is incorrect.

1-Minute Test

Also as a new reader, we strongly recommend that you record a section or two in group projects before embarking on a solo, so that you can get a sense of the amount of time and effort a commitment to a solo recording would entail, as well as become a little familiar with the community here and our process for submitting files, prooflistening, etc. As a soloist, you will be responsible not only for recording and editing all the sections, but you will also be your own book coordinator (BC) which means you will be responsible for entering all the information (titles, time, links) into the workflow system.

You'll get a quicker response if you post the link in Listeners and editors Wanted - and naming your microphone and software means whoever answers can give help that applies to you if needed

Here is the link to my reading of first chapter of the book. Please let me know if it is alright.

I would like to be credited as Geoffrey Venin. The time is 48:22.

I'll MC this for you, but I won't be DPL'ing. I have too much to listen to already. :)

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here:
Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

I moved your uploaded file to my folder and updated the Magic Window. Next time, please wait until you have an MC before uploading. ;)

Great! You're in as DPL. Use the same login as you do when you are entering your solo Magic Window. :)
