Marion, The Story of an Artist's Model by Winnifred Eaton (1875 - 1954).

This project is complete! All audio files are available on our catalog page:
https://librivox.org/marion-the-story-of-an-artists-model-by-onoto-watanna/

In this Asian/Canadian perspective on "foreignness," Marion eventually leaves the cruelty of racial discrimination in Quebec and moves to New York in pursuit of her dream to become an artist. In New York not only does she continue to confront racial discrimination, but also objectification as a woman. Unable to support herself as an artist, she becomes an artist's model. This is a story of "passing," racial identity, and gender during the turn of the 20th century in New York. ( James K. White)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/57920
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

FYI after a fun Internet hunt (the author sounds like a very interesting woman!) I've made her main catalog name Onoto Watanna and listed Winnifred Eaton as a pseudonym. We do this for authors like Mark Twain who published mostly under another name. A catalog search for either name will find her, but Onoto Watanna will be the name at the top of the book page in the catalog. Thanks for the link to her Wikipedia page! That helped a lot. (Her LV catalog listing can also be changed easily if I'm wrong.)

Chapter I, 8:49, https://librivox.org/uploads/chocoholic/marionartistsmodel_01_eaton_128kb.mp3

I sure hope I don't have to murder the Quebecois accent much more in this novel.

It's always exciting when I see that there are new chapters for me to listen to, I love how you read!
One quick note for Chapter 5, you repeated the "May I send you some roses just the color of your cheeks" line. It's said at 4:17 and 4:50. I checked the text, and it looks like the first one was the caption of one of the illustrations in the book, and the line at 4:50 is the one that's supposed to be in the narrative. It should be quick to edit out I think.
Thank you so much!

Chapter V, 12:27, https://librivox.org/uploads/chocoholic/marionartistsmodel_05_eaton_128kb.mp3

Here is the edited version; thanks for catching that. Also, I had surgery on the cervical spine last week, so my voice doesn't last long enough to record anything. I'll return in another week or so with more stamina.
