This short story published in 1957 is unusual for its time in that its protagonist is a female scientist, and there is no romantic subplot. Helped by some of her teammates on the Mars exploration crew, and hindered by others, she struggles to decipher the meanings of the artifacts left by an extinct alien species. What possible frame of reference can humans and the long-gone Martians have in common? The answer is very satisfying in this well told tale. ( Trish E. Matson)

There are already two fine Librivox readings of this story, by Phil Chenevert and Mark Nelson. However, given the rarity of public domain science fiction stories with female protagonists, I think it would be nice to have the option of hearing a female voice reading this story. I plan to narrate it during my upcoming work-furlough week, April 20-27, but of course a proofer can take a bit longer than that to check it.

Hey, sorry I haven't uploaded any files yet. My furlough week ended up being consumed by other projects, including a lot of dusty cleaning that left my nose and throat in sub-optimal condition. But I'll start narrating this week.

No worries about the project; we have lots of time and I am in no hurry to go anywhere. (About dusting, that is why I never dust, it might mess with my sinuses. At least that's what I tell others)
I have recorded all four parts over the last couple of days, while my voice was in good shape. Now for editing out all the do-overs and backtracking and re-pronunciations. I'll do the shortest section first, just in case Cadastra finds any functional errors that mean I'll have to re-record (groan).
