Capt. Robert F. Scott's bid to be the leader of the first expedition to reach the South Pole is one of the most famous journeys of all time. What started as a scientific expedition turned out to be an unwilling race against a team lead by R. Admunsen to reach the Pole. The Norwegian flag already stood at the end of the trail when Scott's party reached their target. All the five men of the Scott expedition who took part in the last march to the Pole perished on their way back to safety.
Robert F. Scott kept a journal throughout the journey, all the way to the tragic end, documenting all aspects of the expedition. The famous last words of the journal were: 'It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. For God's sake look after our people.' ( Illiterati)

Thanks Craig and it is great that you are interested to PL the project! There will be some technical nautical etc language I have to master along the way so my first task will be to check out in more detail the collaborative version to see how they handled things. By the way I don't seem to be getting email alerts for these Scott forum posts and I am sure I should be able to, but can't figure out what I need to click. The Chicago and Anchorage Natural History Museums independently have had recent exhibitions on 19th and 20thC "expeditions." Pretty amazing stories. As to notifications...send me by PM your email address just to make sure we have the correct one. In the meantime check out your "reader page." I find mine more useful than getting emails.
I've just visited the Reader Page which I have not seen before, perhaps it is a new feature. Clearly very useful. I'll let you know when I make my first foragings into the text. For the moment I am parceling out the sections onto pdfs, checking out some pronunciations, etc. Watch this space! Regards Steve.
PS I used to get alerts, but that was a while ago when I was last active on Librivox (by the way I was diverted into The Online Stage Company for a while, but recently retired from that as I generally prefer narration to voicing dramatic characters)
I removed your email address from the previous post because the entire world can read our threads. It was the one "of record" so that was not the issue. Now click on "notifications" at the top right side of this page, then next click on "settings" and then "edit notification options" and finally make sure the "email" box is checked for each item that you want email notification.
Hi Craig, I would like your thoughts/advice on a change I would like to make to the reading, as against the original collaborative version. In the collaborative version the Preface is followed by a long list of expedition members which of course appears in the original Gutenberg. However it is long and rather tedious especially at such an early stage of the audio book. Note that several appendices are omitted from the Gutenberg by version one which I also propose to do, so the precedent is set for a slight editing down from the original Gutenberg text. The other idea I have is to ADD an appendix which was included in the 1923 John Murray 'cheap edition' of the Scott Journals, a short account of the discover of the bodies of Scott and his two remaining comrades in their tents, eight months after the expedition had ended in failure. The account is written by E.L. Atkinson, one of the expedition survivors who had led a search party. It is several pages long and so very poignant, adding hugely to the impact of Scott's final entries as he was dying of cold and starvation. I propose to put it right at the end. What do you think? Is this possible? Of course the text would also be long out of copyright, written so very long ago..... regards Steve
Other than the main body of the text which we require to be "read as written," whether or not to include prefaces, appendices, etc. is up to the reader. As to the appendix from the "cheap edition,' if you could send me via the LV uploader a zipped file container a scan of the title page and the page with the copyright year (if different) I can include that information in the folder containing the audio files. Add the url link to a message in this thread. You might also mention the source of the appendix at the end of the book summary. I think it would attract listeners.
Thanks for this and I will do as you suggest. I do believe it would add greatly to the work, it is quite a short memoir (just a few pages) but so very eloquent in its testimony; and the fact that it is written by Atkinson who was a close collaborator on the expedition, makes it all the more powerful as a conclusion to Scott's work.
Here is the URL to my Zip file, I have scanned all pages of the Oxford World's Classics edition Appendix II containing the complete (3 pages) text of Atkinson's 'the finding of the dead' plus a screenshot of a further more detailed description of the 1923 John Murray Edition which I found on the National Library of Scotland website.
