Philosophical Essays by Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970).
Six out of seven essays appearing here were reprinted from other publications; indeed, this 1910 collection went out of print, so that two of the essays occurring here were reprinted in Russell's 1917 "Mysticism and Logic, and Other Essays". Nonetheless, this essay records Russell's thinking at a critical juncture, just before the publication of Volume I of the co-authored "Principia Mathematica" and just after the passing of the American pragmatist, William James. These essays record Russell's reactions to pragmatism and its theory of truth, as well as the ethical aspects of philosophy suitable for co-existing alongside the new logical method in philosophy, announced subsequently in the 1914 "Our Knowledge of the External World: as a Field for Scientific Method in Philosophy". (Landon D. C. Elkind)

• This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/philosophical-essays-by-bertrand-russell/

  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/philosophicaless00russ/page/n3
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi,
I'll MC this for you. I updated the file name format to include Russell, and the project author as Bertrand Russell.
Cheers,
-Amy

PL note:Longer intro.
Question:
To keep it consistent, do you want to change the intro to the short version?

Howdy again,

Thanks for catching that. I have reposted section 7 with the shortened intro:

The next recordings may take until the end of March to post due to my work schedule. I appreciate your PLing efforts on the project!

PL note: This time it's too short. :( Missing disclaimer.
"Chapter [number] of Philosophical Essays by Bertrand Russell.
This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."

Yo Landon (Brooklynese for Howdy),

I realize you'll be running into a scheduling problem, just pop into the thread for an occasional update.

Howdy Helen,

Thank you for the PL notes! I will re-upload a corrected Chapter 7 for spot-PL soon.

Chapter 1 is also ready for PL, but it is over 2 hours long and over the 100 MB upload size limit. Alg1001, do you suggest breaking this file into two parts?

Thanks kindly!

Yours Truly,
Landon
