Giphantia: or, a view of what has passed, what is now passing, and during the present century, what will pass, in the world by Charles-François Tiphaigne de La Roche (1722 - 1744).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/giphantia-by-charles-francois-tiphaigne-de-la-roche/
After having gone over the whole world and visited all the inhabitants, I find it does not answer the pains I have taken. I have just been reviewing my memoirs concerning the several nations, their prejudices, their customs and manners, their politicks, their laws, their religion, their history; and I have thrown them all into the fire. It grieves me to record such a monstrous mixture of humanity and barbarousness, of grandeur and meanness, of reason and folly.

The small part, I have preserv’d, is what I am now publishing. If it has no other merit, certainly it has novelty to recommend it. (Introduction to Giphantia)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/60058 PDFs for each section: https://librivox.org/uploads/dlolso21/Giphantia.zip
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Kirk,

I can MC this for you.

The MW is started.

I shortened the title, adding the whole subtitle made things a bit long. If you want to add it in the first chapter that would be good, but I think repeating it for every chapter would get to be a bit much.

Moving this over to going solo.

Thank you for being MC David O. I'll do as you suggest, recording the full title for Section 1.

Cheryl, I've separated the chapters in each section into their own pdfs and are available in the zip file above in the Text Source line.

Section 4 and section 5 PL OK
The part about the pictures was almost like the early photographs - taking it into a dark place to develop? uncanny.

Thanks Cheryl.

They were thinking and experimenting with photography in the early 1700's but it wasn't successful until the mid 1800's and then to took 8 hours to several days for the chemicals they used to capture the image. Don't imagine they did many portraits then.
