Hi Aida,

I got confused about section 15 and thought it was ready for spot PL for some reason. In fact, I listened to all of it, because I wasn't sure how to read Sara's PL notes. Since I've already done that, I'd like to mention a couple of things that might be useful:

@5:29, bottom of seq 56: ما تعلم اني
This is how it appears in the text, and it's how you read it. I'm not sure what meaning it conveys to a native speaker. To me it suggested a negation that reverses the expected meaning, and then I remembered that in classical Arabic ما can only negate a past verb... I believe it's a typo, and it was changed to أما in the 1914 reprint (the URL is on p. 2 in this thread, PDF p. 51). Of course, there's nothing wrong with reading what's in the text, but we're also allowed to correct typos.. so, your call.

@22:24 - للمجدّ (from Sara's PL notes)
I can't find this word in a dictionary, but I believe it comes from the expression اجد في سيره, and so presumably would be pronounced "mujidd". http://ejtaal.net/aa/#q=jd

Hi Michael,

Apparently your Arabic grammar is excellent (!) Basically, your observations are correct.

True :thumbs: ما" حرف نفي تدخل على الماضي. مثال : ما جاء أحد - ما ضرب أحد". In the text it means "You Don't Know = ما تعلم اني".

True :thumbs: للمجدّ comes from the expression اجد في سيره, and should be pronounced " mujidd = للمُجِدّ "

To sum up : here are the changes I made to the recording:

@5:03 - كالوطا) كالوطا means like root)
@12:00 - لما (Instead of لماذا )
@22: 27 - للمُجِدّ
About : "ما تعلم اني" I keep "حرف النفي "ما because "ما" is suitable in this case.
About : " البيضان " I keep my first recording ( البيضان means عرب الصحراء الكبرى)

Hi Aida,

Thank you, but I'm afraid it's not, because I only use Arabic for passive understanding. However, I find that PLing makes me think about grammar more than usual, so I think this exercise will help me improve my knowledge of the grammar a lot. :)

Section 15 is PL OK. Great editing! :thumbs:

I wish you a fine start to the week! I should be done with another section before it's over. :D

Hi Aida,

You did an impressive job with all those unusual words in section 16! Here are some suggestions:

@0:38, seq 63: I hear "bazar". I think it should be "bi-azar"
@2:26, 2:31, seq 64: Wehr gives "nuqali" and "nuql" http://ejtaal.net/aa/#q=nql (p. 1167), but it looks like there's variation in pronunciation, and "naql" appears as one of the variants in other dictionaries at the same link. Also appears at @14:00, 30:46, and 30:48.
@11:08, end of seq 67: I hear "mushahat". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muwashshah
@12:14, mid of seq 68: hmm, I think this may be a third word that's written the same: nuqal (pl. of nuqla), meaning (same link as above) gossip (Wehr) or storytelling and jest (Steingass). I think when naql means narration, it refers to a scholarly activity? :hmm:
@12:18, ibid: I hear "yaduqq", written يُدق
@12:20, ibid: I hear a fa3ala verb (no shadda) instead of يختلّ
@19:17, 19:22, end of seq 70: I hear "sifa". I think it's "suffa". http://ejtaal.net/aa/#q=Sf
@30:39, top of seq 75: I head "nibaad" instead of "nabbaadh" (wine-seller)

I'm enjoying this so much! I've been hoping for many years to hear an audiobook of alf layla. When I read an Arabic text on my own, I always feel like I'm missing some of the music. It's only when I hear a great reading like yours that I feel I'm experiencing the full beauty of the language. :9:

Here are what I changed :

@0:38, seq 63: "bi-izar - الإِزَارُ : ثوبٌ يُحيط بالنِّصف الأَسفل من البدن " https://www.almaany.com/ar/dict/ar-ar/%D8%A7%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1/
@11:08, end of seq 67: " Muwashahat - مُوَشَحَاتْ "
@12:18, " يُدق "
@12:20, " يُخْتَلْ "
@19:17, 19:22, end of seq 70: " صُفَةٍ " It means " ظُلَّة، سقيفة، موضِعٌ مُظَلَّلّ " https://www.almaany.com/ar/dict/ar-ar/%D8%B5%D9%8F%D9%81%D9%91%D8%A9/
@30:39, top of seq 75: "nabbaadh - النَبَّاذْ"

Concerning : "naqli النَقْلِي and naql النَّقْلُ " are correct. " النَّقْلُ :ما يُتفكَّه به من جَوز ولوز وبُندق ونحوها - Nuts, Almonds, Pistachios, Peanuts... " - " النَقْلِي : بائع النَقْلْ " https://www.almaany.com/ar/dict/ar-ar/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%82%D9%84/

Chapter (16) (حكاية الحمال والثلث بنات) is ready for spot PL : https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/alflaylahwalaylah_16_unknown_128kb.mp3

Stay safe.

Hi Aida,

Here are some suggestions for section 17:

@3:22, seq 76: I hear "la uhash". I think it's "la awhash". I found only one dictionary entry for this expression, وقد أَوْحَشَهُ الله فاسْتَوْحَشَ: https://www.almaany.com/ar/dict/ar-ar/%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%AD%D8%B4/
@11:50-12:08, seq 79: repeat
@14:56, seq 80: I hear "lajam". I think it's "lujum" (reins)
@15:18, ibid: I hear "عَربان". I think it's "عُربان", a different word: https://www.almaany.com/ar/dict/ar-ar/%D8%B9%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86/

My sister-in-law in Montreal tells us there's a new lockdown. I hope you're doing well.

Hi Aida,

I have just a couple suggestions for section 18:

@1:52, end of seq 81: I hear فتأمنّاهم instead of فتأملناهم
@7:32, end of seq 83: I hear "mumsik". I think it's "mumassak" (perfumed with musk)

Can't wait to hear the continuation! :D

Hi Michael,

I apologize for the delay.

Here are the corrections :

@1:52 - فتأملناهم
@7:32 - مُمَسَّك "mumassak"

Also, @12:39 - "ṣalāti صَّلَوٰةِ - " instead of "salwat - صلوة". An example in the Quran : « ‏« حٰفِظُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰتِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلّٰه قٰنِتِينَ « ḥāfiẓū ʿalā ṣ-ṣalawāti wa -ṣ-ṣalāti l-wusṭā wa-qūmū li-llāh qānitīna.»
