Hi -

Here are three more Chapters -- 58 - 60.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_60_dumas_128kb.mp3
5:22.6, 90.0 dB

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_61_dumas_128kb.mp3
5:32.7, 89.9 dB

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_62_dumas_128kb.mp3
5:00.4, 88.6 dB

Spring is awakening. Lots of lambs out in the paddocks, daffodils, other early blossom. And the days are getting longer.

Enjoy, and thanks for listening.

60-62 PL OK.

It was fall in Denali. The tundra can be quite colorful though not as much as in temperate areas. It's still summer though in Chicago. That and the time zone shift coupled with exhaustion from daily 8-hour hikes have left me needing a vacation from my vacation.

Hi -

A trip to Denali sounds wonderful. Was once on my "bucket list" but that was before I moved to NZ. The tundra is above the tree line there, isn't it? You can see the bears coming a long way off....????

Here are 4 Chapters if I haven't gotten myself tied in knots.

Chapter 61: https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_63_dumas_128kb.mp3; 7:14.0, 89.3 dB
Chapter 62: https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_64_dumas_128kb.mp3; 3:08.7, 89.3 dB
Chapter 63: https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_65_dumas_128kb.mp3, 5:49.3, 87.7 dB
Chapter 64: https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_66_dumas_128kb.mp3, 4:39.9, 90.8 dB

All these little short chapters make me wonder about Dumas's contract with whatever periodical was running his book - whether he got paid by the installment, by the chapter, by the line or what.

Cheers

63-66 PL OK.

Yes, it is mostly treeless (some with stunted growth). It was either spongy (your feet sunk inches into it) or covered with low shrubs/bushes. Both were challenging for hiking. There were no trails and we are asked not to walk behind someone to avoid creating a trail. When you fell in the spongy tundra it was a soft landing that was very inviting (locals call it tundra lounging). The shrubs were quite dense and after a few hours one became exhausted from the effort of fighting with them. The moose were of more concern than the bears. They are big! It was rutting season and the males were not in a playful mood (their antlers look pretty intimidating).

I once read the serialized version of David Copperhead. The book version was definitely shorter. At the time I felt that the missing text was necessary and couldn't understand why it was not included the book version.

Hi --

Chapters 65 and 66 have been uploaded and are ready for proof listening.

Chapter 65:
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_67_dumas_128kb.mp3
3:08.0, 89.6 dB

Chapter 66:
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_68_dumas_128kb.mp3
8:10.2, 88.9 dB

Thanks

Gail

I can relate to your off track difficulties. Walking on spongy stuff can be really tiring. Here it is the mossy stuff in the bush -- or marshy stuff -- where there isn't a track. Walking through shrubs -- bush bashing through scrub -- is also really tiring. I am reminded of a tramp from Boscawen Saddle into the upper Blue Grey river where we just went for it instead of taking a high sidle to get to a track which was notorious for being scrubby and awful. The riverbed wasn't an option because it was deeply incised... You can't go over it, you can't go under it, you gotta push through it. Big mistake, but we got where we were going eventually and it was heaven when we did get to a track.

67-68 PL OK.

Yes, you don't realize how easy trail hiking is until you've spend hours off trail.

Hi -

Yep. Gotta love a good walking track -- although best if not TOO hardened off. A bit of lovely soft leaf litter is good.

However, on a different matter -- here are Chapters 67 - 69.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_69_dumas_128kb.mp3
6:56.6, 89.5 dB

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_70_dumas_128kb.mp3
6:13.3, 88.0 dB

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_71_dumas_128kb.mp3
6:12.7, 89.4 dB

I reloaded Section 68 (chapter 66) by mistake -- hopefully that doesn't cause a problem.

Thanks for listening.

Hi --

I have uploaded Chapters 70 - 72.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_72_dumas_128kb.mp3
11:02.5, 88.5 dB

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_73_dumas_128kb.mp3
6:29.7, 88.3 dB

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_74_dumas_128kb.mp3
5:02.6, 88.0 dB

Thanks for listening to 68 again to check on it.

And thanks for listening!

I am thinking of embarking on another ambitious project -- the Endeavour Journal of Sir Joseph Banks. Anne and David - would you be happy to continue our collaboration to record it? It doesn't seem to have been read for Librivox by anyone yet. It would have been timely to have thought of it before now since it is the 250th anniversary of the landing of the Endeavour in NZ, with Australia too coming up (April 2020). This anniversary has been quite fraught politically here in NZ, with some Maori seeing nothing much to celebrate (I get that!) -- I wonder how it is being seen in Australia?

Your thoughts?
