[COMPLETE] The Queen's Necklace by Alexandre Dumas - annise
Hi -
Section 1 has been uploaded for DPLing.
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_01_dumas_128kb.mp3
13:04.5, 90.0 dB
Backing up a bit - I wanted to comment after the last Chapter of "Travels" that there are about 2,500 recorded native NZ species of plants, of which about 2,000 are endemic. I don't know whether those numbers include the lichens or not, of which there are about 1,000 recorded species. By 1841 the naturalists had barely scraped the surface.
Thanks for listening!
Cheers
Gail

1 PL OK.
The fungal species found in a lichen are typically not found alone (i.e. without the algal species). I suspect most of the fungi in NZ are endemic (as is true for many/most NZ taxa). Personally, I have an inordinate fondness for ferns.

Hi -
Part 2 of the Prologue has been uploaded. Long.
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_02_dumas_128kb.mp3
47:19.2, 89.0.
Let me know please if I've made any errors. So likely with such a long recording and proof-listening effort.
Ferns are cool too although there are a couple of species that one gets rather tired of walking through when going off track in some areas. Not a lot of ferns in the midwest as I recall?
Thanks for listening.

While there are plenty of NZ endemic lichen species there are heaps that are cosmopolitan, australasian, bipolar(!) etc. I haven't seen any modern estimates of the proportion that are endemic. Lichens must have a fantastic ability to get around. I am pretty sure that the genus name that they are given follows the fungal partner. My fondness for lichens includes spending rather a lot of hours in painting watercolours of them.

I looked at the lichen drawings on your website. Very nice. To use an old joke...Everyone likes a lichen. And yes the lack (or almost) of ferns here does make me appreciate them perhaps a bit more. Their abundance in NZ (some almost tree size as I recall) does make me a bit jealous.

Hi -
I have uploaded Chapter 1 (Section 3).

12:09.0, 90.3 dB
This is the last recording on this computer. Next recording different computer, same microphone. Hopefully it doesn't end up sounding very different - I don't see any reason why it should be different.
Thanks for listening.

Hi -
And here's Chapter III (Section 05)
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/queensnecklace_05_dumas_128kb.mp3
15:49.8, 89.3 dB.
The new computer has seems to be interfering a lot less with the microphone -- and the old Blue Snowball is still working as it should, plug and play. Yay!
Thanks
Gail

I looked up the climate in France during 1784 and found that indeed there was a particularly harsh winter and that it has apparently been blamed on the eruption of an Icelandic volcano (Laki). Having been to Iceland you probably know all about that.
Thanks for listening

Yes, we visited the site of the Laki eruption (and the E15 volcano!). Iceland (like Hawaii) lies above a hotspot where really deep magma rises to the surface. A land of 200+ volcanoes (though few eruptions).

Hi Anne and David --
I think I've found what might be an interesting book to read, continuing my interest in Antipodean travel and natural history. It is Matthew Flinders' "A Voyage to Terra Australis Vol. 1". Have you read it Anne? (I heard a reference to it when listening to an eAudiobook of Di Morrisey's "Arcadia" and was intrigued so looked it up).
I'm thinking of starting another SOLO project of it -- but will read a bit first to check that I like it well enough. Of course I'm aware that I have another project on the go -- I would work my way through both of them at the same time I'd guess. Any thoughts? Am I being a bit of a resource hog suggesting two projects at once?
Cheers
