Why is the Negro Lynched? by Frederick Douglass (c.1818 - 1895).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/why-is-the-negro-lynched-by-frederick-douglass/
We have felt that the most fitting tribute that we, of the Anti-Caste movement, can pay to the memory of this noble and faithful life is to issue broadcast—as far as the means entrusted to us will allow—his last great appeal for justice (uttered through the pages of “The A.M.E. Church Review” only a few months before his death). A slanderous charge against Negro morality has gone forth throughout the world and has been widely credited. The white American has had his say both North and South. On behalf of the accused, Frederick Douglass claims, in the name of justice, to be heard. (excerpt from the book's intro)
This is an abandoned solo, re-opened as a group project. Larry (silverquill) has agreed to stay on as DPL. Welcome back!
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/59116
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I know I said in Book Suggestions today that I would set this up next week but I kept looking at it and wanted to get it started. I will record the first section this week to get it started and under way but then I'll get back to finishing up pending assignments and get to the rest after that. Should be short enough for me to manage.

First section should be a zero section for the untitled intro.

Thank you!

At first look I thought the chapters had titles but on a deeper look I see that the 'titles' were just the first of a couple headings within the chapter (which weren't even in the original publication, according to a footnote). I'll read them as part of the content of the chapters but the chapter titles are just roman numerals.

Also, the intro seems shorter than I thought, but we'll see how it goes. I know I can put it into the first chapter if I decide.

That's all for now, thanks!

Thanks for the update. Let me know if you need me to delete a section.

We'll sit here for a day or two to see if we can snag a PLer.

Hey guys - posted the intro for PL. I'll probably post the first chapter tonight, as well, because I want to get the book officially under way, but then back to finish March strong.

Intro seems now way short but now I know better how I might deal with it next time. I still like that it's material he didn't actually write so it's separate from his.

No big rush on the PL, obviously.

Thank you!

EDIT: Also, as a head's up, instead of saying "Chapter 0" for the intro, I said "Introduction". I also read all of the material printed by the publisher right before the actual first chapter. It should make sense once you hear the file. Thanks again.

Ah, good to have the intro. I think you handled this very well. Even thought the intro is short, it should have it's separate file. And using "Introduction" instead of something like "Section Zero." is the preferred format and the one I always use. (I read a lot of introductions for projects). This is PL OK. I'd personally use a little noise reduction, but it is fine as it is. I probably overdo it.

And, thanks for taking the younger brother in Why the Chimes Rang. I have a volunteer for the Old Woman, so we are full. I've got to PL a couple of parts, and then we're underway. No hurry on it yet, of course.

As promised, Chapter 1 is up for PL now.

Thanks, Larry, for the feedback about the intro and the noise cleaning. Part of me trying a solo (other than being immediately inspired by the material) is that I'm starting to be ready to think about the technical stuff on a greater level...I still feel new but I'm past "just get it recorded"! I've been nervous about messing too much with the file because I don't always know what I'm listening for, so thanks for the note about the optional noise cleaning. I put Chapter 1 through an extra round from the intro and if it sounds good I'll do it to the Intro, as well.

Also, as promised, I won't plan to update this with new files until at least a few days in April.

Excited about the play, too, it will be my first participation in the One-Acts.

Thanks for everything!

Ah, this chapter sounds great! And, very powerful. We need to get more of this man's message recorded. Haven't checked to see what else might be available.

Truth is, I'm not the most adept with the tech stuff, and have learned just enough to get by, I think.
I hope in about a year to have a real home studio set up, and maybe upgrade some of my equipment.
Our new location is quiet from outside noises (deer and mink are quiet, and even the wild turkeys don't make any noise and the bears haven't come out of their caves yet, although they are supposed to be hungrier than usual this year, I'm told), but we've got a very noisy refrigerator. Ugh. I can clean the noise, but it does degrade the audio some.

The important thing is that you read well :D

Thanks Larry! I agree, it is quite powerful and was powerful and, at times, challenging to read. I even sat on it for a day before submitting it because it felt a bit rushed at first listen...but he writes with such urgency, you know...this will go in the nonfiction category with other essays but they are really like monologues.

I agree with you, getting this out there is important. Truly tragic, though. There's another solo doing My Bondage and My Freedom at the same time as us (it wasn't in the catalog before, amazingly) right now. Seeing that get launched first made me think I'd like to maybe read his work, too. Then, I happened to be on Gutenberg the day this book was released, so I just leaped it to the top of the stack.

That's cool to hear about your recording situation because I'm basically at the same spot. We are looking to build a studio in our home too but for now I have the little soundbox thing that the mic sits in...very remedial on the post-production aspects but I think I learn a little every time.

Getting through some plays that have deadlines this week before this gets more attention to it.

Thanks again!
