Here is Chapter 11. Duration 31:15 Volume: 88.49

https://librivox.org/uploads/dlolso21/romanceofexcavation_11_masters_128kb.mp3

Layard, like many of the earliest archaeologists, was little better than a tomb robber:

In 1847 the young British diplomat Austen Henry Layard explored the ruins. Layard did not use modern archaeological methods; his stated goal was “to obtain the largest possible number of well preserved objects of art at the least possible outlay of time and money.” (Wikipedia)

Almost makes Indy look legit.

Chapter 11 is PL OK!

True it is about the tomb robbers. For one, Schliemann is sincerely hated by many a today's historian for what he did to Troya. Really makes old Indy and Lara Croft look real "archaeologists". :)

Well . . . yes. I just signed up to read Tutankhamen: And the Discovery of His Tomb ... by Sir Grafton Smith. If you're interested in PL-ing, that would be terrific!

Thanks for the great work on Romance of Excavation. You turn chapters around faster than I can read them. Good show.

Wow, David. That's really fast. I can say one thing about this LV organization: it doesn't gather any moss . . .

Thanks for all the great help. I really enjoyed reading this book. I've signed up to do another one, too:
