St. Francis of Assisi by G. K. Chesterton (1874 - 1936).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/st-francis-of-assisi-by-g-k-chesterton/

For Chesterton, Francis of Assisi is a great paradoxical figure, a man who loved women but vowed himself to chastity; an artist who loved the pleasures of the natural world as few have loved them, but vowed himself to the most austere poverty, stripping himself naked in the public square so all could see that he had renounced his worldly goods; a clown who stood on his head in order to see the world aright. Chesterton gives us Francis in his world-the riotously colorful world of the High Middle Ages, a world with more pageantry and romance than we have seen before or since. Here is the Francis who tried to end the Crusades by talking to the Saracens, and who interceded with the emperor on behalf of the birds. Here is the Francis who inspired a revolution in art that began with Giotto and a revolution in poetry that began with Dante. Here is the Francis who prayed and danced with pagan abandon, who talked to animals, who invented the creche. I read this book as a young man and not only did it introduce me to the amazing world of Chesterton, but it was a revelation of how an entire culture could be captured in a slim volume. (summary by Phil Chenevert, Wikipedia and various other PD sources)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/francisofassisi00chesuoft/page/n5
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Phil,

I by chance looked at the PL view of my catalog page (which I normally never look at), and saw that you had some files ready for me. I didn't know since you didn't post in the thread! :-)

Chapter 1 is PL OK!

I will get the other two Pl'd shortly. :-)

Hi Phil,

2 and 4 are both PL OK!

It is easier on me if you let me know when you upload. I am DPL'ing quite a few projects, and I can manage things better if they are spread out. :-)

Hi Phil,

Thanks for letting me know. :-)

Two small PL notes.

@ 0:26 - there is a small repeat. "to slight"
@ 4:46 there is a phone or bells in the background. (Not a big deal, so if you don't want to fix that, no problem - just thought you would want to know. :-))

Possible. Baby (the cat) does check on my recording progress every now and then and I don't even hear her bell. She approved by the way.
