Good morning

Section 06 is uploaded:
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/travelsinnewzealand1_06_dieffenbach_128kb.mp3
19 min 27.0 sec, 90.2 dB.

Yes, we did have a good trip although the drive north up the Kaikoura Coast is still hard work due to all the major roadworks after the quakes of 2 years ago. On the way home we managed to time our drive to miss the worst of the trucks, which are predictable with a bit of examining the ferry timetables, so it was a bit easier.

Always good to miss a Chicago snowstorm.

And, last night about 8:30 pm NZ time when I was trying to upload, my laptop told me that the Librivox site wasn't secure (so I was out of there asap). Was there a hacking attempt that you know of? Hope the person or bot didn't get through.

Cheers

6 PL Ok.

Glad to hear your planning paid off. Apparently our "security certificate" was supposed to automatically renew and didn't. The certificate affirms that we are a safe site.

Hello -

Section 07 has been uploaded.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/travelsinnewzealand1_07_dieffenbach_128kb.mp3
17 min 4.1 sec, 89.7 dB.

Glad that the security warning was for a trivial reason.

Thanks

Hello -

Section 09 has been uploaded. I'm having a bit or a recording bash this weekend -- next comes a drought.

https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/travelsinnewzealand1_09_dieffenbach_128kb.mp3
14 min 12.2 sec, 89.4 dB

I looked at my topomap app for the names of the islands near Kapiti -- Motungarara is there (aka Fishermans Isl), so is Tahoramaurea (Browns Isl) and Evans island is now called Tokomapuna (Aeroplane Isl). Mana is farther south, opposite the modern town of Porirua. His spellings are often different to modern accepted spellings - and I'm attempting to pronounce things as he has spelled them, which can be "wrong" cf today.

In the attached Chapter West Bay is Endeavour Inlet and East Bay is Onauku Bay. I had to find an image of a Cptn Cook chart to figure that out, however.

I'm finding the accounts of the politics/wars among the Maori interesting, and wondering about the modern ramifications of those land sales for sweet nothing to the New Zealand Company. This is all after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. I know very little about this but do know that there is plenty of "history" among the iwi at the top of the South Island. The information in the South Island Rangitane Treaty of Waitangi settlement is interesting and although a summary, revealing... https://www.rangitane.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Settlement-Booklet.pdf. You may recall that Dieffenbach said Rangitane were all gone except for a few slaves ....

Thanks for listening.

Cheers

Thanks for listening.

I went kayaking in the Everglades and was totally unprepared for the biting flies (some are I believe called sandflies). How the indigenous peoples lived there is beyond me.

Hi --

I didn't know the Everglades has sandflies, but I guess I'm not surprised. Southern Florida has all the bitey things going, hasn't it? Otherwise, I hope the paddling in the Everglades was magical and many moments of wonder (when not being tormented) were had.

With regard to moments of wonder... or not... here's the final bit of Chpt VII.
