The recent war and famine in Yemen may be traced to the events described in this chapter in Egypt and Syria. As a result of those alarms, Britain seized Aden in 1839 and used its ports until the late 50s without any regard to colonial development away from the coast. The country they left, Yemen, was a place of poverty, chaos, and corruption.

I see what you mean about the troubles in Syria, Yemen, etc. I've often thought the best way to teach history is to start with an issue in the present and trace it's roots back to a time when it started, rather than start with the past and work your way forward the way they do in public schools. Anyway, good choice of books to read.
I sometimes wish our government included the "vote of no confidence" option.
