25 and 16 are up, both fairly short.

I must say that though I realize we are around 1880 here, and thus in the midst of High Victorianism at its highest, it seems a bit much for a girl to be ashamed of herself as "unmaidenly" because she asks the local vicar for the source of a poem he quoted.

Merry Christmas and I believe it is time in Australia to go to the beach. But not up here in the northern hemisphere, I'm afraid.

chaps. 30 and 31 are now up. I'm also going to get to work on the descriptive note, having had a very interesting reply from a colleague who's a historian of Britain, about how the Church of England handled difficult cases like this.

The last two chapters -- 32-33 are now up and I'll rework the description tomorrow.

I've added my new description. Originally I'd thought that Carlton's Roman (or papistical, as used to be said) leanings would get him trouble, but though that might be the subject of a Trollopian ecclesiastical comedy in Barsetshire, things are more serious here.

On the whole I'm afraid I found the book a disappointment, though I very much enjoyed the very different Witching Hill. Peccavi is too long, and Gwynneth comes across (to me anyway) simply as a kind of Victorian male idealization of a young woman devoting her life to Higher Causes.

Many, many thanks for all your help once again.

Nick
