The Principles of Philosophy, originally published in Latin in 1644, and translated to French in 1647, sets forth the principles of nature--the Laws of Physics--as Descartes viewed them. The book provides a systematic statement of natural philosophy and metaphysics, and represents the first truly comprehensive, mechanistic account of the universe.
The Selections from the Principles of Philosophy contains the whole of the first part of the book ("Of the Principles of Human Knowledge"), as well as selections from the second ("Of the Principles of Material Things"), third ("Of the Visible World"), and fourth part ("Of the Earth") of the book. (Foon)
Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard
IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated). Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording! START of recording (Intro):
"Section [number] of Selections from the Principles of Philosophy. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Say: "Selections from the Principles of Philosophy, by René Descartes. Translated by John Veitch. [Section]"
For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
"Section [number] of Selections from the Principles of Philosophy by René Descartes. Translated by John Veitch. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Only if applicable, say: "[Section title]"
END of recording:
At the end of the section, say: "End of [Section]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of Selections from the Principles of Philosophy, by René Descartes. Translated by John Veitch."
There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
Example filename principlesofphilosophy_##_descartes_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. principlesofphilosophy_01_descartes_128kb.mp3)
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: craigdav1
When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
If you need a DPL, I would be glad to do this for you, as long as you are okay with the fact that I will be traveling on holiday for a couple of weeks next month, and will have limited capabilities during that time. This would be fun for an old philosophy major. Lego ergo sum
Hi Larry,
Thanks for the offer! That should be fine! I'm going to be away next week, but after that I hope to have a high turnover in recordings since I'll have a decent bit of time. But I don't mind if PL takes a bit longer... after all, this book is a few centuries old, it can handle taking another couple of weeks to be catalogued :p
Foon - Real life is getting in the way of LV, will be slow until all is back on track, please bear with me!
Can I just check with you, is it OK to ignore footnotes? Or to selectively ignore them? I haven't quite decided what I'd like to do with them, but it would be good to know what my options are as per LV policy

You can include (none, some or all of) them as you see fits the situation. I would put them with the relevant text rather than at the end of a chapter or page.
Brilliant, thanks. I think I will decide as I read what I'll do with them.
Also, I'd like to include two letters in the preface, but they're reasonably long (one of them is 5700 words by itself). Do you think it would be a good idea to keep section 0 as is, or should I split them?
I've been a bit overzealous with estimating section numbers, could you remove the empty sections? Sorry!

Files should be no more than 70m long though some readers prefer to keep them shorter. After you record the first section you can decide whether to split it. An empty section can be dragged and dropped just below the first section. For safety reasons only Admins can delete sections. It can be done anytime before cataloging. Now that the team is complete I'm going to move us to the Going Solo forum.
I just noticed that you have leading numbers in the MW titles. While permissible I tend to avoid it. Would it be easier to use the section number in the intro/outro?

Ah I see where you're coming from. I would quite like to keep the numbers in there, since the book is clearly split into Part I-IV. Would it help if I rename them "Part 1. Of Principles of Human Knowledge" etc?

Yes, it would.
Alright, done!

Any comments/feedback you have are highly appreciated. And if you have PL notes where you're wondering if you should mention them or not (tiny stumbles, only slightly different word that doesn't change the meaning much, etc), please do tell me. I don't mind editing and putting extra work in it at all, if it makes my recording better!
