Volcanoes and Vulcanology (1885-1917) by Various ( - ).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/volcanoes-and-vulcanology-1885-1917-by-various/

This is a collection of short scientific articles of historical interest on the subject of volcanoes and related seismic activity around the world, published in Knowledge, A Monthly Record of Science from 1885-1917. ( J. M. Smallheer)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): see links in MW
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Section Title by Author. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

For the second and all subsequent sections, I will use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Section title by author. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
"End of Section title by Author, Knowledge [year]"

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
    • Example filename volcanoes_##_sectiontitle_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. volcanoes_01_southernitaly_128kb.mp3)

And I have caught up with you - all are PL OK!

I notice that you don't use "section x" in the intro. I found it a bit confusing in the beginning. If all sections are that short, it might be hard to figure out where you left off if you stop somewhere in the middle. Just sayin'. :D

Other than this: I was hoping for something more "meaty". :? Still, very interesting and well read!

Thanks. :)

Since it really doesn't matter in what order you listen, I was using the same type of intro we use for the nonfiction collection, but I suppose you have a point about the section numbers. I'll think about changing the intro and outro to add them to the recordings.

In the NF collection, there are lots of different topics, so it's relatively easy to remember whether you heard this particular one already. These here are all similar, also the length is not really an indication.

On the other hand, the whole project will be rather short, so maybe people would just listen in one go anyway.

Aargh... I just see that I missed this...

I'm sorry, I'm a bit busy in RL right now, PLing will have to wait until next month. Hope that's okay with you!

I'll just continue uploading sections as I get them done.

On that note, 14 and 20 are now in the MW.

Thank you Jo, that was interesting!

I caught up with you with the exception of the Etna - I'll listen to that one when the whole is finished.
Cheers, Ava.
