(This time, Gutenberg was right with 'facture' in relation to craftsmenship, while Collins had mistakenly put 'fracture'. Gotta watch'em!)

Hi craigdav1,

I need your advice.

Yesterday I filled in the MW up to Chapter 30, including a word count for each chapter. These vary wildly, but I was amazed to discover that Chapter 24 is 11,440 words long, which will take close to 90 minutes to read, and subsequently to listen to.

My first thought is to do it just as the author intended, but because of the unusual length I think splitting into two more or less equal sections is worth considering, and I can see a 'natural break' where this would be possible.

Are there any technical constraints which make either course of action difficult?

Drawing on your own experience, what do you think?

Tom,
Because some people (probably very few these days) burn the files to cds in cda format and play them on a cd player we limit the file length to around 70m. This would necessitate that you split Chapter 24 into at least two sections. I just added an empty section after 24. Chapter 24 now will have Parts 1 and 2. The intro and outro should mention both the chapter number, 24, and the part number, 1 or 2. The only problem this creates is that the sections and chapter numbers are different. Chapter 25 will have 26 in its file name, chapter 26 will have 27, etc. To play in the correct order the files must be numbered sequentially. This situation is common but does sometimes cause readers to number files incorrectly. Your inclination is to label a chapter file with its chapter number as you will have up to chapter 24. I hope this doesn't sound too confusing.

Thanks, Dave.

I'll be careful to make the correct changes which result from splitting Chapter 24, including changes to file names.

I've just had a quick look at some of the later chapters and there are two chapters in the 30s which have 10,000+ and 11,000+ respectively, so I wouldn't rule out this occurring several times more. I'll let you know well in advance about the detail of any necessary changes.
