London Labour and the London Poor Volume 2 by Henry Mayhew (1812 - 1887).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/london-labour-and-the-london-poor-volume-ii-by-henry-mayhew/
Subtitled, "A Cyclopaedia of the condition and earnings of those that will work, those that cannot work, and those that will not work."

"The history of a people from the lips of the people themselves .. their labour, earnings, trials and sufferings, in their own unvarnished language, and to pourtray the condition of their homes and their families by personal observation of the places ..." "My earnest hope is that the book may serve to give the rich a more intimate knowledge of the sufferings, and the frequent heroism under those sufferings, of the poor ..."

Henry Mayhew was a social researcher and journalist. He compiled a four volume work in minute detail on the lives of the poor in London, of which this is the second volume, published in 1816. ( Peter Yearsley)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Have a lovely time!

I always have trouble deciding on key words for my projects; I hope you don't mind that I've stolen some of yours to go into my volume of "London Labour".

Edit: and done :D You might want to think about shortening the file name. Also, ID tags are superfluous as they are overwritten by the system at cataloguing. Just ask if you need anything else.

No probs! Part of my message to you was going to be asking if you'd mind if I copied your blurb about the 4-volume set. I realise I forgot to do that now! Hope you don't mind.

For the recordings, is "londonlabour_2_££_mayhew_128kb okay? Or do you think there would be confusion with Vol. 1?
(££ to be replaced with the hash symbol.)

That would be fine. Just go and edit the first post (or I can do it). It isn't 'official' until you start uploading sections (and even then, with a bit of LV magic, I can edit file names 8-) ) Click on the pencil in the top right corner to edit.

Gill, of course you're welcome to my summary from volume 1.

Thinking of which, the heading of your project that's displayed in the forum overview doesn't show Henry's volume number. Would it be worth shortening the heading somehow, so it can be seen as volume 2?

It would be great if LibriVox could get all four volumes recorded.

Just butting in slightly - it might be a good idea to continue Peter's naming protocol - he starts the filenames labor1_## etc. You don't have to, but I'm not sure that if someone dowloads all 4 volumes , the files will start with vol 1 , it is possible some sorts may put _2 before 1, different software seems to follow different rules about non alpha characters

Anne, I agree with you that we need a volume-to-volume numbering system. I hadn't imagined that anyone would be recording the later volumes, when I started.

The file names for volume one are "londonlabour_###_mayhew_128kb" at the moment. Would it be simple to change the existing filenames to "londonlabour1_###_mayhew_128kb" or would you like me to upload them again with new file names? I'll start with the new numbering scheme for my next section straightaway.

EDIT: Wow! Looking back at the first page in my London Labour solo, I see that I should have been using "londonlabour1 ..." right from the beginning! .... and failed to, right from the beginning! My apologies, Anne.

I don't seem to be able to change the forum heading. Can admin do that or should I re-launch the project?

What do you want to change the heading to? Anne was suggesting a change to the file name, not the heading.
